When superstar chef Anthony Bourdain visited Cartagena, he went to La Cevicheria (no website; Calle Stuart No 7-14 San Diego, Cartagena; 1-57-5-664-5255) to sample its innovative ceviche. The dish, traditionally prepared with raw seafood marinated in citrus juice, adopts new ingredients, such as mango, garlic butter or even mozzarella cheese at La Cevicheria. It's a good compromise of traditional cuisine and inventive cookery.

Regarded as one of the best ceviche and fish restaurants in the whole city, head to La Cevichería for a break from all the fritos (fried food) you’ve been eating and experience some incredible Peruvian/Colombian fusion food. Expect fresh fish, exciting flavors, lots of lime and some seriously good cocktails. The place is eternally busy and you’ll have to wait for a table.

A once little-known spot prized by locals, La Cevichería was given ample publicity in an episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations in 2008.

Cozy seafood eatery La Cevichería was featured in late chef Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations TV series, which means it’s basically always busy, but it’s more than worth the wait, both Visnyei and Munoz agree. “Everybody goes there – tourists and locals,” says Visnyei, adding that she and Munoz try to return whenever they’re in the region. “It’s just really good, unfussy seafood.” The restaurant is tiny and doesn’t usually take reservations, so show up early and get ready to be blown away by the quality of the food (standouts include a giant dish of paella that takes 35 minutes to prepare) and a welcoming atmosphere.

In 2023, chef Heberto Eljach, the brains behind Alma, debuted Ánima in Casa Pestagua, focusing on the ancestral traditions of Colombian cuisine. “Ánima’s relationship with Colombian cuisine is focused on ancient techniques of traditional cooking — this includes preservation methods (cured, salted, fermented, canned, smoked, pickled), the use of local products, artisanal fishing, organic products from the Montes de Maria, Amazon, and other regions of Colombia,” Eljach told T+L.

We particularly loved La Cevicheria located just off of Plaza de San Diego, it is pretty much full day & night so be prepared to wait for a table & sample some yummy Peruvian ceviche!. We also loved dropping by Cafe Stepping Stone, an awesome little coffee shop offering a simple but varied menu & a nice chilled atmosphere. This place is run by some Australian guys who take local people from under privileged backgrounds & give them work placements between 3-6 months long with the aim of helping to teach them the necessary skills to step into the working world.

On Calle Stuart, at one end of the plaza, is La Cevicheria (ceviche) & Patagonia (Argentine) & a very flash hotel with not a bad bar if you’re after a drink in a better location, Hotel Santa Clara. (Walk out of the hostel and make a right, another right at the corner, walk straight down and pass the main road, continue straight and cross the division in the rd, continue you straight until you walk up to a street called “Calle Jardin” and a small store on the corner on your left. Make a left at the store and 3 blocks down in the plaza)

As the name might suggest, La Cevichería specializes in and prepares the freshest and most appetizing ceviches that are now famous on the streets of Cartagena. With many different varieties created with the freshest select ingredients, the super-friendly small establishment with tables on the sidewalk goes further and also fuses other seafood dishes, such as octopus, lobster salad, and paella. The style is simple and there are a limited number of tables available, which are always very popular and generally occupied.

While you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, the lobster ceviche—which comes in a bright, citrusy broth with two packets of saltine crackers on the side—is life-changing. It is one of the top options in the old town of Cartagena to get some good quality fish with a nice vibe. There are plenty of other alternative options out there, but given the tradition of this place and the quality of food, the hype is justified.

La Cevichería is another spot that I unfortunately didn’t have the opportunity to dine at. Not for any particular reason—there’s just only so many restaurants a girl can fit in three weeks, especially when you factor in a 4-day trip to Santa Marta and Tayrona National Park. However, this local seafood haunt comes highly recommended for where to eat in Cartagena among bloggers, travel experts, and locals alike.

We came here for lunch at the recommendation of Anthony Bourdain on a former visit. It’s definitely not a hidden gem (we waited for over an hour) but nevertheless, the ceviche truly was fantastic. I’d recommend coming right when they open for an earlier lunch to avoid long waits (but even if you find yourself standing around for a while, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the end product!)

As I mentioned above, La Cevichería blew up in popularity after Bourdain’s visit. Not only did Bourdain eat at La Cevichería, but he also toured the Bazurto Market with the restaurant’s chef, getting a crash course in fresh local ingredients and Cartagena’s fascinating culinary heritage blending Spanish, African, and indigenous influences. This place shot to fame after Parts Unknown host Anthony Bourdain made a visit years ago but hasn’t lost any of its quality since becoming well known. Although ceviche is easy to find in Cartagena, La Cevicheria stands out by offering a variety of options and generous portions. Now, I will personally admit that I did not love this place as some of the others that I visited in Cartagena, but I definitely still think you should try it for yourself!

We were really on the fence about visiting La Cevicheria (or, “the place where Anthony Bourdain went when he was in Cartagena,” as it’s probably best known). The reviews were mostly good, with some bad ones thrown in the mix, but I worried about quality simply based on the sheer number of reviews for the place. Oh, and the prices are steep for the city.

Made famous after being featured by Anthony Bourdain, La Cevichería is one of Cartagena’s most popular spots. The fame is well deserved, as the ceviche here is absolutely terrific!. Personally, I like the traditional with lime juice, onion, and cilantro, but there are also Peruvian style, and Caribbean style, with coconut milk, ceviches on offer.

Then there’s the Catedral de Cartagena, one of the oldest episcopal sees in the Americas, as well as the Naval Museum, which is, appropriately, right by the sea. After a hefty dose of culture, you’ll want a snack from La Cevichería – an unassuming little shop situated on an alleyway that serves the freshest ceviche in little paper cups.

As the star of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown Cartagena episode, La Cevichería normally has a sizable line for a table. It will be worth that wait though – the restaurant’s fresh seafood and fish, saturated with mandarin and lemon juice and tossed with fruit and herbs, is some of the best ceviche in a city abundant with the dish.

Although many restaurants serve ceviche, La Cevicheria will most likely pop up at the top of a lot of your searches. We happened to walk by it around 4PM on our first day and snagged a sidewalk table to enjoy a glass of wine and a small bowl of ceviche, served with crackers. It was a lovely snack in a beautiful setting.

We had tried to dine here since the first day we arrived, but it was packed every single time we tried. They don’t take reservations, they’ll just add your name to a long list of names. For the most part, there is almost some sort of available seating inside but everyone wants to sit outside and people-watch.

No visit to Cartagena is complete without sampling its iconic ceviche, and La Cevicheria is the place to do it. This cozy spot is often packed, a testament to the quality of its dishes. This restaurant came at the suggestion of several people I know who have visited the city frequently for business. This tiny restaurant, as the name implies, specializes in ceviche. Ceviche being one of my favorite dishes, I was in heaven with the many selections of fresh fish.

Would you believe I spent two months living in Peru, aka “the capital of Ceviche,” prior to coming to Cartagena?!. Yet, the best ceviche I’ve ever tasted was at La Cevicheria in Cartagena!. Aptly named, this eatery on Calle Stuart is most renowned for its delicious ceviche!

If you’re in Cartagena, the only excuse you have not to try ceviche is a seafood allergy. And where better to try the celebrated national dish than at La Cevichería?. Expect the freshest fish, the liveliest flavors, and a lightness of touch that makes the ingredients sing.

According to Louis, the quality of Laguna Azul is equal to that of Cartagena’s most famous establishment La Cevicheria, which was honored by Anthony Bourdain. But the prices at La Laguna Azul mean you can have ceviche every day, instead of saving up for a special occasion.

Thanks to Tony Bourdain, you have to wait hours for a table to La Cevicheria. Still, there is a reason why we waited 40 minutes for a table. It might seem simple to combine freshly chopped seafood with lime and lemon juice, but in their hands, it’s otherworldly.

If you watched Anthony Bourdain eat his way around Cartagena de Indias, you might remember La Cevicheria. However, there is great ceviche all over Cartagena. Nearly every restaurant serves at least one variation, and it makes for a great appetizer.

Sponsored by Anthony Bourdian, this little gem is constantly packed. We came on a mid Monday afternoon and only managed to secure the last table in the restaurant. We ordered the fish ceviche (wow!) and crab claws drizzled in mango sauce.
