Reviews Summary

La Cevichería is celebrated for its incredibly fresh and flavorful seafood, especially its signature ceviche and garlic shrimp. Diners praise the exceptional service and vibrant atmosphere, often calling it a must-visit in Cartagena. However, some guests find the prices high for the portion sizes and note that outdoor seating can be disruptive due to street performers soliciting tips.

"La Cevichería serves the best seafood I’ve ever had. The lobster, calamari, and shrimp tasted like home cooking with an elegant twist. The mixed seafood with fresh fruit and mango sauce was unforgettable, bursting with flavor.

The staff were exceptional, making me feel like royalty with their warm, professional service.

I’ll be back in Cartagena, and this spot will be my first stop. Highly recommended!"

Abdulmohaimen Al Dulaimi

"Do not sit outside unless you want to tip every single performer that performs while you eat. We’ve had 4 performers in the span of an hour. They come directly to you to ask for tips.

We came here because it was popularized by Anthony Bourdain. It probably was great back then but definitely not today. The dishes were spammed with lots and lots of shrimps. The ceviche didn’t taste fresh. Octopus tasted like rubber. It was overall an unpleasant dinner and it’s overpriced too. Go somewhere else"

Krystal Phuar

"Great experience eating here solo. Jorge was an amazing server he answered all my questions and gave me a great recommendation for food! I had the Colombian ceviche! A lot of different flavors that worked well together! Jorge also knew I liked a spicy flavor so he brought over some spicy sauce which I thanked him for. I also had a mandarin juice! Overall a great meal, great vibes, in a good spot."

Lively and colorful, this is what a cevichería should feel like. Choose from the tables outside, white wrought-iron stools at the kitchen bar or small wooden tables in a small but festively decorated space marked by its blue-and-white chequered floor and plenty of nautical details. Besides an excellent rendition of a classic Peruvian ceviche, also be sure to try the Douglas ceviche with mango, shrimp, lemon, and red onion, or splurge on the tropical paella.

Seafood Restaurants in Cartagena, Colombia

When superstar chef Anthony Bourdain visited Cartagena, he went to La Cevicheria (no website; Calle Stuart No 7-14 San Diego, Cartagena; 1-57-5-664-5255) to sample its innovative ceviche. The dish, traditionally prepared with raw seafood marinated in citrus juice, adopts new ingredients, such as mango, garlic butter or even mozzarella cheese at La Cevicheria. It's a good compromise of traditional cuisine and inventive cookery.

Cozy seafood eatery La Cevichería was featured in late chef Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations TV series, which means it’s basically always busy, but it’s more than worth the wait, both Visnyei and Munoz agree. “Everybody goes there – tourists and locals,” says Visnyei, adding that she and Munoz try to return whenever they’re in the region. “It’s just really good, unfussy seafood.” The restaurant is tiny and doesn’t usually take reservations, so show up early and get ready to be blown away by the quality of the food (standouts include a giant dish of paella that takes 35 minutes to prepare) and a welcoming atmosphere.
