While the previous recommended restaurant, Mamasita Medallo, offers a wide variety of modern Colombian dishes, this restaurant stays more traditional and is perhaps the best restaurant in Medellin for those unfamiliar with Colombian cuisine and want tasty, authentic Colombian dishes. Hacienda is a successful restaurant with several branches spread across the city that focuses exclusively on traditional Colombian dishes such as Bandeja Paisa, Sancocho, and Chicharrón-inspired dishes. The staff wear traditional costumes from the country’s Andean region and the restaurants are decorated with colonial motifs.

Next, hop past 300 illuminated pillars to the seat-of-an-archbishop Metropolitan Cathedral, built with over one million bricks, before darting to traditional eatery Hacienda Junin to try a traditional lunch. Wander away from the city bustle under the wooden wonderland of fluttering butterflies in the Botanical Garden, and Parque de Los Deseos that turns into a movie theatre under the stars at night. Space-for-change barrio Moravia awaits, where streets are lined with politically powerful street art and children playing fúttbol.

However, we must all start somewhere and an excellent choice for authentic local cuisine is Hacienda (La Strada, Avenida El Poblado, Local 225). Now a chain of four different restaurants, the focus here is on home-cooked style food with a rustic, Antioquian twist. That means chorizo empanadas with fried potato, arepas and yuca all make regular appearances in various guises on the menu.

Slap-bang in the middle of town, Hacienda is a restaurant where they’re proud to serve local dishes, and it shows. Medellín’s shrine to all that’s best in traditional Paisa fare, it’s the top place in town to get a bandeja paisa. They call their version a bandeja de la Hacienda, and it’s a veritable mountain of food: pork, beans, rice, egg, sausage, plantain, minced beef and avocado.

Haciendo is an excellent restaurant to experience classic paisa food and culture. First opened downtown in 1991, there are now six branches around the town. Hacienda is one of my personal favourite Colombian restaurants. They offer a huge variety of traditional Colombian dishes for a fair price and of excellent quality. The menu also includes five different, traditional Colombian breakfast options, including the popular Sanduche de Morilla.

Hacienda right on Junin street is another really quality choice for some typical Paisa cuisine. They’ve got all the mainstays from Cazuela de frijoles to the Bandeja Paisa. The Cazuela goes for 22.000 and the bandeja at 32.000 — a little steep, but guaranteed good.
