In a wonderful example of repurposing the old, this friendly café serves great coffees in the skylight-covered courtyard of a one-time department store. Modern art decorates the walls of the building that dates from 1907. The place can be hard to spot since you don't immediately see it from the street.

Amongst the hustle and bustle of the noisy downtown area, there’s a quiet sanctuary of a coffee shop and art studio called La Mancha. When you reach the Levis store in front of you on the main Central Avenue, take a right and you’ll find their entrance into a courtyard on the left hand side. In this area of the city, you probably won’t be expecting to walk into this old style building with a high glass roof and decorative white archways.

Café La Mancha offers a wide variety of coffee blends paired with high-quality pastries, all within one of the oldest buildings in San Jose. The Steinvorth Building, constructed in 1907 by Italian architect Francesco Tenca Pedrazzini, commissioned by the Steinvorth brothers – Wilhelm, Walter, and Otto Steinvorth Ulex, German merchants who settled in Costa Rica in 1872. It was declared an Architectural Heritage of Costa Rica in 1999.

This café is an escape, an oasis in the city center, where you can forget about the cars and non-stop traffic mere meters away from you. Café La Mancha hosts workshops on brewing methods, and you can also purchase the their own brand of coffee. The images of coffee producers on the packaging will underscore your impact at origin, helping you to understand your connection to the supply chain.

Cafe La Mancha – this cute cafe is located right across from the Central Market in San Jose, just outside of Barrio Escalante, so stop by after your soda lunch!. They have an open air seating section in a courtyard which used to be part of an old factory building. The place is uber hip, with a tattoo studio, murals on the walls, public art, and other quaint shops.

Speaking of coffee, the best brew is at La Mancha in downtown San José, and nobody will ever convince me otherwise. Located in the Steinvorth Building, it has been around for the better part of a decade and sources its coffee from small farms throughout Costa Rica. For me, it was love at first sip when I visited the place in 2022.

Cafe Franco, Under Ground Brew Cafe and Cafe La Mancha, were the cafes we visited. We discovered two of these fantastic cafes through Luis Arocha, one of our hosts at OXCART Coffee. He led us to his two local favourites - Franco and Under Ground Brew Cafe.

This is the perfect coffee shop to go when you are downtown. They serve delicious coffee, pastries, sandwiches etc. in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. You can also buy bags of coffee here, which make for great souvenirs.
