What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Sikwa offers a unique and innovative dining experience, celebrating Costa Rican ancestral cuisine with Michelin-star quality dishes and a strong cultural focus. While many praise the exceptional food, attentive service, and educational aspect, some diners find the prices high and note occasional issues with menu accuracy or cocktail availability. The ambiance is generally pleasant, though one review mentioned smoke extraction issues.
"Hands down one of the best meals and restaurants in Costa Rica. Unique flavors and locally sourced, fresh ingredients. Michelin star worthy. You can taste and feel the passion of the chef in each and every dish. It is a fine dining place. But the prices are justified for the quality and way more affordable than you would pay for something similar in say New York or a big city in US. Highly recommend if you are in San Jose and looking to try some local flavors with a twist."

"I came upon this restaurant because of the world's top 50 list. I went here my first night in Costa Rica. The service was dreadfully slow, though the staff was friendly. The food was tasty, but I think their overall menu is a little too sweet for me. It could be that I just combined too many sweet-leaning things, but my stomach was not happy with me the night that I ate here."

"Absolutely stunning dishes, creatively imagined and expertly prepared. It was a beautiful meal, and well worth the stop. The cocktails were also very good, but did not appear to be executed at the same level of care as the food. Mostly my disappointment came from the fact that 3 of the 11 signature cocktails on the menu were not available at 6:30pm on a Friday night, which seems far too early to be running out of anything. We also received an outdated menu when we were seated, which caused a little confusion.
Overall though, absolutely excellent and definitely recommend."

In fact, the menu is a call to action, highlighting treasured ingredients that are slowly disappearing, such as Guanacaste’s blue corn, as well as introducing diners to the gastronomic traditions of the native people of Costa Rica.

Sikwa, in Barrio Escalante, focuses exclusively on indigenous ingredients and recipes. Chef-owner Pablo Bonilla works with communities close to the Panamanian border, learning their techniques and sourcing ingredients to recreate dishes like chicken stew spiced with achiote (a red paste from the seeds of a native shrub) and smoked plantain ice cream.
