Marco Polo Restaurant, tucked away in one of Dubrovnik’s charming Old Town alleys, offers an intimate and inviting atmosphere perfect for savoring Mediterranean cuisine. For dinner our first night, we went to Marco Polo- a small family restaurant nestled in the narrow streets of Dubrovnik's city-center. While hard to capture on photos (hence the daytime shot I pulled from online above), you'll swoon over the romantic, dimly lit atmosphere that allows you to escape the hustle and bustle of town and relax. The team was so hospitable and we instantly felt right at home while they encouraged us to try traditional Dalmatian food that we weren't too familiar with-- I was blown away by all of it.

This family-run bistro-style restaurant combines rustic, old-fashioned Dubrovnik charm with modern and creative cooking techniques and methods to bring you a little authentic taste of the Dalmatian region of Croatia. Heading outside into the restaurant’s courtyard, you are transported back to Dubrovnik’s heritage and history with its quaint Old Town streets, stone walls and fortresses. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and inviting with a chic, modern style.

In Marco Polo restaurant (marcopolo-dubrovnik.com), down a tiny stone street in the Old Town, Marija talks me through each dish - the dried, smoked tuna is salty because it was dried near the seaside; the oysters are from Ston, a town 30 miles north which has the oldest oyster farm in Europe and 5.5km-long walls; the ham was dried in the Bura northern wind.

Our first night in Dubrovnik we found ourselves at Marco Polo for dinner and we were off to a good start!. The vegetarian section of the menu may not have been much longer than most other restaurants we looked at, but it was full of interesting sounding dishes. I went with the sesame crusted tofu and I’m so glad I did.
