Consistently praised as the best ice-cream parlour in Split since opening in 2014, Luka also has the most choice for gluten and dairy-free customers. It’s not cheap, but their lush creations with fig, blueberry or pear, are worth it. Cakes, cheesecakes and pastries are also available.

Delving deeper — into a scene that feels like one big lowbrow party, with the natives decompressing from a busy day of dealing with tourists — you’ll pass cafés, bars, “pizza cut” windows, and more. To satisfy your sweet tooth, look for Stari Plac (with dessert crêpes); just beyond is Sexy Cow, with a hip white-subway-tile interior and a tempting menu of decadent, top-end burgers (Zrinsko Frankopanska 6).

When I’m travelling I try to eat at least one ice-cream a day (for research purposes of course.) Although not quite up there with the best of the best, Luka Ice Cream is very good. The best part about Luka is its unusual flavours like watermelon, honey and lavender, and mojito. Luka is located just outside the prettiest part of the old town, so grab your ice-cream and walk back down toward the palace to find a more interesting place to sit and watch the world go by while you eat.

Matt needed me focused and ready for what he considered the main event of the day – dessert at Luka Ice Cream and Cakes. We skipped the indoor seating and headed straight for the walk-up counter outside. An older woman running the fryer suggested a waffle cone filled with fritules (remember those sweet donuts we’d already had that same morning?) and house made ice cream.

Look no further than Luka, the go-to ice-cream spot in town!. Since 2014, Luka has been whipping up delicious gelato that keeps both locals and tourists coming back for more. But it's not just any gelato – it's a creamy, dreamy delight that caters to all tastes, including gluten and dairy-free options.

The other is Luka IceCream & Cakes, which has become an unavoidable place for premium ice creams as well as for imaginative cakes and cakes, chocolate biscuits, mousses, Jaffa or vegan cubes (with stew), cream pies “to go” (served in a glass) or unexpected combinations such as beer and ice cream.

Luka ice cream and cakes - Split has many ice cream parlors but this venue offers something completely new and unique. You can choose between a dozen flavors that change daily, you could find apple pie, caramel cheesecake or even lemon-rosemary and lavender gelato. They are all to die for.

Although it’s not a restaurant, I wanted to give this place a quick mention. It was easily the best ice cream I had in Split with a ton of options for 12-16 kuna per scoop. As you can see from the photo, there’s always a line outside Luka Ice Cream & Cakes.

I’ve gone a little off course and departed Marmontova Street, but I believe the diversion is worth it. Follow these directions from the theatre to the best gelato in Split. You will probably have to line up, which is always a good sign.

I’ll keep this brief, because honestly it shouldn’t take much convincing to get you to go to Luka. A scoop of ice cream at Luka costs just 7 Kuna, or just shy of $1.

Luka is the name of a Polish traveler who visited Split and decided to stay. Luka has very quickly become Split’s favorite pastry shop.

I still prefer our good old Ledo ice cream sold at many bars and cafes around town. My suggestion: try both and judge for yourself!
