ST Burek

Before spending a month in Split, we stayed in Dubrovnik for three days and had the pleasure of trying a few different burek pastries while we were there, so I was very excited to sample even more at ST Burek on our food tour in Split. ST Burek is one of the oldest burek-based establishments in Split as they’ve been operating since 1983 and it’s clear to see how they’ve stood the test of time when you try one of their tasty treats. A burek (börek) is a savoury snack that’s made from flaky filo dough and stuffed with a variety of fillings such as meat, potatoes, cheese and spinach.

Split Burek, which uses the abbreviation ST for Split, is great for a quick and satisfying meal. It’s also one of the cheap places to eat in Split, with a hearty portion of burek costing about $4. A Balkan classic, burek is phyllo dough stuffed with spiced minced meat that is curled into a spiral and then baked and served like a pie.

The best place in Split to get Burek, hands down, is St. Burek, located here. It’s just 10 Kuna (about $1.40) for each enormous piece of Burek. Be sure you try their Apple variety (totally our fave) and the Spinach and Cheese version.

They have a terrace at the promenade but also a cool little balcony looking over the Riva. The food and drink menu is extensive, although nothing extraordinary. This is a nice place to relax over a drink and watch the world go by.

I have a love-hate relationship with börek after eating way too much in Croatia. This flaky pastry dish is stuffed with ingredients like cheese, spinach and potato. It’s filling and tasty but often very oily.
