All that food €10?! 😱 This cash-only, hole-in-the-wall Croatian fish and chip shop is one of the best, and oldest, restaurants in Zagreb – They’ve been here for nearly 80 years!! This place is cheap in the money way, but definitely not skimping on taste. Here you will find a small but outstanding menu of local fish in a retro setting. When I tell you that plate of calamari did not even last ten m...

Reviews Summary

Stari Fijaker is celebrated for its authentic Croatian cuisine, generous portions, and cozy, old-world atmosphere that makes diners feel at home. Patrons rave about traditional dishes and the exceptional homemade bread. While the food is a major draw, some reviews mention slow or inattentive service, with occasional complaints about specific dishes not meeting expectations.

"Had the most amazing meals today good honest home cooking. I had the stuffed peppers(cabbage rolls) cabbage not in season, it was just as I remember having as a kid back home in Australia. The veal schnitzel was also perfect. Well worth the visit while in Zagreb."

Peter Abood

"Great food, great vibes, but not too great service. The boiled lamb is a must try dish featuring melt-in-your-mouth lamb ribs and soul soothing broth. Not to mention how delicious this would be during the winter months. I also loved that they serve the baked squid with generous portion of sautéed spinach. The chef learns his healthy eating well. However, i felt that we were not welcomed by the tall waiter. We need to walk around the restaurant to find someone to take our order. The tall waiter even rolled his eyes when I asked for breakdown on our food bills. Also, they did not let us know that the bread costs €3 before serving to us. These four stars are for the food and the vibe, and hopefully they can improve their hospitality."

Christine Qi

"This place offers excellent local food with a true taste of Zagreb. The staff are exceptionally friendly and make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Both the food and wine are outstanding—flavors are fresh, authentic, and perfectly balanced. It’s definitely worth a visit if you want a genuine local dining experience. Just make sure to reserve a table before coming, as it’s usually busy, which only shows how popular it is with both locals and visitors."

Top 10 alternative hang-outs in Zagreb | Zagreb holidays

Outside Kino Europa, there's a huge statue of behatted poet, Tin Ujevic (Zagreb honours its many writers with monuments). You should visit Tin's favourite (and now legendary) eaterie, Gostionica Tip-Top on Gunduliceva 18, where you'll enjoy photos of the poet, go goggle-eyed at the intimate, socialist design, including a dozen glass-bowl lamps overhead, and relish a Dalmatian cuisine of fresh fish (£40/kilo), octopus risotto (from £6), fine island wines, and the chocolate-and-walnut 'Marco Polo' desert. (The explorer was said to have been born on the island of Korcula, Dalmatia, where the owners of Tip-Top are from.) If you'd prefer Zagreb cuisine, you can't go wrong with another legendary venue, Stari Fijaker on Mesnicka street.

Restaurants in Donji grad (Lower Town)

This old-fashioned restaurant with vaulted ceilings, wood-paneled walls, and crisp white table linens was the first one in Croatia to earn the certificate of Croatian Authentic Cuisine. The menu features carefully presented traditional Croatian dishes not easy to find at other restaurants—especially those native to the Zagreb region—such as Za gorska juha (Zagorje-style potato soup with ham and mushrooms), pečena teletina (roast veal), and punjene paprike (stuffed peppers). This is a place beloved by locals and tourists alike, so recommendations are recommended.

From the embroidered red-heart tablecloths to the dark brown panelling and pictures of old Zagreb, the barrel-vaulted dining room of the 'Old Coach' is a nowadays rather rare example of what pretty much every traditional Croatian restaurant used to look like. The menu is famous for sticking to north-Croatian staples, with schnitzel-style cuts of meat, roast turkey with mlinci (baked pasta sheets), venison goulash, and roast knuckle of veal leaping off the pages of a lengthy and not too pricey menu. Litres of wine run at 60kn.

Market Street Food & Drinks POP - Restaurant - Zagreb

For anyone who wants to present local, traditional cuisine to a guest from abroad - the right address is Stari fijaker. Renovated about thirty years ago, on the occasion of the city’s 900th anniversary, the restaurant has consistently nurtured the atmosphere of old Zagreb all these years, and the antique furniture and photos of the Upper Town also contribute to this. You can start the lunch with a typical Zagreb dish - boiled ham with horseradish along with salted kind of mini croissants and scones - and continue with some of the classics.

Finally, it has arrived, eaaaating in Zagreb

The Pivnica Stari Fijaker is more expensive than the previous ones that I have mentioned. Once crowned the gastronomic offer of Zagreb, and its interior design, which highlights the sidewalks, wood and white tablecloths, still retains a certain subdued sobriety. In the kitchen, tradition dictates, so sausages, beans and strukli (fresh cheese fritters) will not be missing.
