Just when you thought Cienfuegos' eclectic architecture couldn't get any more eclectic, you reach the southern end of Punta Gorda where, with a sharp intake of breath, you'll stumble upon the impossible-to-classify Palacio de Valle. Built in 1917 by Acisclo del Valle Blanco, a wealthy Spaniard from Asturias, the structure resembles an outrageously ornate Moroccan casbah, but draws on a mad mix of Gothic, Byzantine, mudéjar and baroque influences.

The most impressive of Punta Gorda's mansions is the Palacio de Valle, which was built in 1917 by the sugar baron Asisclo del Valle. It's a stunning, sumptuous structure full of ornate relief work, crystal chandeliers, hand-painted tiles, Italian-marble columns, French windows, and carved Cuban hardwoods. The design of the Palacio de Valle recalls the Moorish art of Spain from the 12th and 13th centuries with Mudejar, Gothic, Romantic and Baroque influences. It owes its name to the surname of the owner and was designed by the Italian architect Alfredo Colli over a period of four years, with mate- rials of the highest quality marble and stones from Italy, ceramics from Granada and Venice, fittings from Spain, European crystals and precious wood from Cuba. For its many architectural values and styles, the Palacio de Valle is one of the attractions of the city known as the Pearl of the South, declared a World Herit- age Site by UNESCO.

As you explore the city, you will find that there are really two main regions, the colonnaded centre and the Punta Gorda area, where a series of palaces date from the 20th century, such as the rather elaborate Palacio de Valle. Standing alongside the Parque Jose Marti is the Casa de la Cultura Benjamin Duarte (formerly the Palacio de Ferrer), which features a dome-shaped cupola and superb cityscape views. Just a stroll away is the Catedral de la Purisima Concepcion (Cathedral of the Most Pure Conception), which is now more than 150 years old and known for its two towers (one tall, one short) and French stained-glass windows.

Paseo del Prado covers the western part of the city and leads to Punta Gorda, home to some of the most beautiful houses in town, including the iconic Palacio del Valle. The 1913 building—a symbol of the city—displays a series of architectural elements reminiscent of Spanish Moorish art. The builders sought inspiration in myriad styles, including Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque and Mudejar, a cacophony of influences that resulted in a gorgeous and balanced palace.

Out on the end of Punta Gorda, past the Malecón, is the historic old Palacio del Valle (tel. 43/55-1003 ext. 830), an eclectic architectural masterpiece, which covers vast stylistic ground in its compact floor plan. The centerpiece here is the Salón Comedor (dining room), which dates to 1917 and tries to imitate the intricate Moorish stucco and tile work of Spain's Alhambra. Other rooms are done variously in baroque, neoclassical, and Gothic styling.

The crown in Punta Gorda’s architectural crown, however, is the incredible Palacio de Valle. Built between 1913 and 1917, it is an eclectic mix of styles. Its carved wood interiors are reminiscent of Spanish-Moorish designs while the red-tiled turrets jutting from the rooftop are in perfect keeping with Cienfuegos’ neo-classical style.

The region is an ideal base for sailors exploring the south coast of Cuba. The Marina Marlin Cienfuegos offers modern facilities and access to fascinating sailing routes. From here it is easy to reach the spectacular islands of the Jardines de la Reina, a marine reserve renowned for its unspoilt marine life and biodiversity.

However, the most emblematic building in Cienfuegos is Palacio de Valle (Valle's Palace), which was financed by a wealthy Spaniard and built by an Italian engineer, combining in its architecture elements of the Gothic, Romanesque, Byzantine and Baroque styles, with a preponderance of the Mudejar style.

At some point Paseo del Prado becomes the Malecón, which leads you directly to Punta Gorda and Palacio de Valle. The Malecón is not such a busy street as the one in Havana, so it is really nice to walk here and admire one of the world’s finest natural bays. For this walk we took our baby stroller.

A sculpture park was a local, hidden gem we encountered on our way to Palacio de Valle. A unique home with Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque architecture. At the top, you’ll be treated to lovely views of the water and a lively band.

There is a big hotel called Hotel Jagua near Palacio de Valle. Personally, I wouldn’t prefer to stay in this area as it is very quiet and not much to do around here. Most of the restaurants are much closer to Parque Jose Marti.

From the Central Plaza we walked to the Palacio de Valle building. This lovely walk down the Malecon de Cienfuegos was made even better by the classic cars cruising by and teenagers playing Reggaeton music on their boomboxes.

Palacio de Valle – Almost at the end of the Paseo El Prado (the Malecon) you can find this beautiful building, transformed into a classy restaurant. On the roof you get a great view while sipping from some expensive drinks.

The Palacio De Valle is a must-see attraction in Cienfuegos. This stunning 19th-century palace was built by the Cuban aristocrat Don Francisco Javier de Borbón y Vallé.

One highlight is the cool old Teatro Tomàs Terry and the opulent Palacio de Valle, a 1917 mansion that is now a restaurant and rooftop bar with views of the harbor.

The Palacio de Valle is located here and well worth a visit. We took a look inside the Hotel Jagua, but weren’t very impressed, it looked really dated.

It’s a rather posh residential area that, however, has some of the most alluring landmarks, namely the Yacht Club and the Moorish Palacio de Valle.

Take a walk along the Malecon to get your bearings and have a look at the kitsch Palacio del Valle and the Catedral de la Purisima Concepcion.
