Overlooking the river and next to the National Theater, this old-school continental European-style café is one of a clutch in Prague where you can imagine playwright-turned-independence hero Václav Havel holding court or composer Bedřich Smetana winding down after a performance. Actually, you're not just imagining it: all sorts of Czech artistic luminaries have supped here, including the above, and Havel liked it so much he even lobbied for it to reopen when it closed for reconstruction in the 1990s. It's old-school, so beer is perfectly acceptable at almost any time of day.

Located opposite the National Theater, Café Slavia, where Apollinaire and his surrealist pals once sipped absinthe, this cafe has solid literary credentials. Pay tribute to the avant-garde by indulging in a kava Slavia: coffee laced with the infamous green liqueur and topped with a swirl of whipped cream. Be sure to secure a seat by the windows at the back of the large main salon for a magnificent view over the river encompassing Petřín with its miniature Eiffel Tower and the sprawling Prague Castle citadel.

Café Slavia is a perfect example of what is known locally as a “Prague grand café”, technically, an Art Deco space with glass windows, imposing crystal chandeliers and lots of mirrors. Slavia used to be the meeting place for anti-communist dissidents several decades ago (Czechia’s current president was a regular here as well). Because of its location right across the street from the National Theater, this cafe is now popular not only with theatre-goers, but also with the artists that perform there.

Cafe Slavia is the oldest cafe in Prague, which has been in (almost) continuous use, apart from about 8 years restauration after 1989. The cafe opened in 1884 and become super popular when the National Theatre (one of the most important theatres in Prague) was opened across the road. Artists from the theatre included actor Jindřich Mošna and theatre director Jaroslav Kvapil as well as writers Jaroslav Seifert, Vítězslav Nezval, Karel Teige, the Čapek brothers, Václav Špála, and Jan Zrzavý, and later Václav Havel and Václav Černý were also frequent visitors.

Cafe Slavia, or Kavarna Slavia, is Prague's most famous cafe. It opened before the turn of the 20th century in what is now Old Town and has long been a hotspot for artists, writers, and dissidents, the most famous one is Vaclav Havel before he became president of the Czech Republic. But Cafe Slavia isn't relying on its history to keep its reputation alive.

I couldn’t have written a blog post without mentioning this gem facing the Vltava River. This place is right across the street from National Theatre and has a rich background of playing a role as a meeting point for many cultural figures. Meanwhile, it is not usually a place to study or chill; it is a perfect place to go for a date or a celebration.

These two cafés have a special place in the history of Prague. Slavia café is located in a place with a privileged view of the historic Charles Bridge, the national theater, and part of Hradčany through its large glass windows. It was established in 1881 and was very popular because many famous Czech artists used to meet there.

Over the course of more than a century, Café Slavia has stood as a witness to the upheaval that has been Prague’s history. Artistic and intellectual types congregated there, such as Franz Kafka and Albert Einstein. Its exceptional location, overlooking Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge, only adds to its appeal.

Cafe Slavia has been around for over 100 years, and the polished wooden furniture and sleek finishes keep it looking as chic as ever. Taking in the views of the river while sipping a chocolatey espresso and munching on a tart, juicy apple strudel with perfectly crisp pastry was an experience I can’t wait to redo!

On this route, you'll pass the National Theater (Narodní Divadlo) and the famous Cafe Slavia. Next you'll cross the Legií Bridge offering stunning views of the Vltava (Moldau) River, the Charles Bridge, the Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana) and Prague Castle atop its bluff overlooking them all.

A splendid example is Café Savoy with its majestic neo-Renaissance ceiling, Café Imperial with original ceramic tiles, Café Slavia, the center of Prague’s café culture, Café Louvre with Belle Époque-style decorations, or the two cafés located directly in Prague’s Main Train Station.
