Reviews Summary

Aamanns 1921 is praised for its innovative take on traditional Danish smørrebrød and its beautiful ambiance in a heritage building. Diners love the creative dishes, the attentive and knowledgeable service, and the overall fine dining experience. However, some guests have found certain dishes to be too salty or have experienced issues with the execution of tasting menus and attentiveness of staff in specific seating areas.

"I went with a local friend, and it’s clear why this place is so well-regarded. They specialize in smørrebrød, the Danish type of tartine with varieties for every taste: fish, meat, veggie.

They’re also very accommodating, offering gluten-free and lactose-free versions of their smørrebrød. A special bonus: they even have their own Aquavit (Danish schnapps), which adds a nice authentic touch to the experience.

The staff is lovely and the restaurant is spacious, though I’d still recommend making a reservation."

Michel Pham

"We had the 8-course tasting menu. Apparently the dishes were designed by the restaurant to be shared. This concept worked reasonably well for the starters, but it did not felt right for the main course, which was unfortunately served cold. Overall, the execution of the menu didn’t quite meet our expectations.

The service was warm and professional. However, our table was placed in a corner and we were often overlooked, which made it difficult to get the staff’s attention at times.

All in all, a mix of thoughtful ideas and good service, but the experience didn’t fully deliver."

Patrick Edlinger

"The shrimp open sandwich is heavenly good! Even the shadow is artistic! I wanna go back and try it again

It’s weird though, that although there are empty seats, walk in guests were told that it was fully booked. Until I finished my meal, the seats were still empty. Maybe they thought everyone wanted a 2-3 hour proper dinner so there wasn’t enough time for that."

His Michelin-recommended Aamanns 1921 is a stylish spot tucked into a quiet cobblestone street just steps from the bustling Strøget shopping area. Top 10 guide to eating in Copenhagen | Copenhagen holidays

The time-honoured tradition of smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) – buttered slices of rye bread decorated with fish, meats and vegetables – has seen a renaissance in recent years. Aamanns, around the corner from the National Gallery of Denmark, is one of the places to put a modern twist on this Danish classic. The sandwiches are piled high with pork rillettes from the much heralded Grambogård farm, barrel-cured herring from Iceland and chicken salad with poached and crispy salsify.

Over by the botanical gardens, Aamanns (Øster Farimagsgade 10-12, map), both a deli/takeaway and a (newer) sit-down restaurant (Aamanns Etablissement), gets a whole lotta love for its signature, more contemporary smørrebrød, offered as a much smaller menu Monday through Sunday—if you visit the deli, there are plenty of picnicking opportunities in that area. Told Og Snaps (Toldbodgade 2, map) and Restaurant Kronberg (Brolæggerstræde 12, map) are two more we recommend in a long line of traditional Danish-lunch eateries.
