You may find yourself wondering, as you stare at the ceiling while owner and sommelier Riccardo Marcon pours grappa directly into your open mouth, How did I end up here?. Here is a modest-looking Italian spot in the city center started by the former head sommelier of 108, Noma’s shuttered sister restaurant. Pre-pandemic, Barabba was a late-night industry spot and even now, go on a Tuesday and you may find your somm from Saturday enjoying her “weekend.” Ask Marcon to pair your pasta (yes, you should spring for the spaghetti with anchovy butter and a gob of caviar) with whatever he’s most excited about.

Last but not least is Barabba, another unplanned pit stop that actually got recommended to us by the staff at Barr, the restaurant we had on our to-do list before finding out the kitchen was already closed upon our arrival (normal people don’t eat their dinner at midnight, I guess). At Barabba the orders are accepted until 2 am, so perfect for us late birds, and it’s apparently where the chefs go after work, which is always a good sign. Whether it’s actually true or not, I quite frankly don’t care, because it exceeded my expectations.

Barabba is a must-visit for anyone looking for an intimate dining atmospherem perfect for a romantic evening or catch-up with friends. Run by two Italian chefs, the menu provides an eclectic mix of authentic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours from hummus to baba ghanoush, but also offers modern cuisine with dishes like seaweed tiramisu. Everything is beautifully presented and bursting with flavours, which has ensured the owners a mention in the Michelin restaurant guide.

Local chefs head to this buzzy Italian restaurant for post-shift plates of pasta, punchy cocktails and natural wines. The vibe is shabby chic, with ornate chandeliers on the rough walls, antique dressers on terrazzo tiles and wooden tables and chairs laid with vases of white flowers. Try silky folds of pappardelle with rich hare ragu, juniper and taggiasche olives, gnocchi with wild mushrooms or spaghettone with savoy cabbage and mussels.

Contemporary Italian restaurant Barabba is one of our favorite hangouts in Copenhagen. Head chef Marco Cappelletti’s pastas are some of the most sinful in town, loaded with buttery sauces, and often topped with generous amounts of truffles or caviar. Barabba also has one of the best natural wine cellars in town (and that’s saying a lot considering Copenhagen just might be the natural wine capital of the world).
