This warm, festive, family-friendly locale serves dishes quite typical of Salta and the Northwest such as classics like humita (steamed corn husks filled with cheese) or the local locro stew, with beans and hunks of beef. You'll dine in a room steeped in local tradition, amid wine jugs and old wooden implements. Empanadas and meats are also reliable; the pastas are unremarkable, though.

Located just off Plaza 9 de Julio (Salta’s main square), this is a great spot to try some regional cuisine. The restaurant offers a rustic interior, and the menu includes some more unusual options, such as rabbit and goat, as well as a classic steak. There are also several vegetarian options, like cheese or vegetable empanadas, a feature which is rare to find in the region.

Visiting Salta’s various museums will give you a well-rounded insight into the region and its significance in Argentina’s history. There’s the Museum of Fine Arts (Museo de Bellas Artes de Salta) and Museo Guemes which attempts to outline the life and death of Martin Miguel de Güemes (a Salta hero of the Argentine War of Independence) in a light manner via interactive videos and talking portraits. It takes about an hour to go through the museum, photos are indeed permitted and you do need to understand Spanish for the talking exhibits.

Doña Salta's empanadas are on the podium of the richest in the city. They have the classic small size of the Salta empanadas, surely you have to ask for a good quantity because you are going to love them. Some empanadas are prepared with spice, or you can ask that they be served with yasgua sauce (tomato sauce) or you can put lemon inside and accompany them with a glass of very cold Torrontés.

Doña Salta (Córdoba 46, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 12 a.m., all week) — Family friendly and modestly priced, Doña Salta is located smack in the middle of town, across the street from the Iglesia San Francisco. This bodegon-style restaurant offers Salteño classics like locro and empanadas in a traditional, downhome setting adorned with wine jugs and wooden utensils.

In recent years Doña Salta may have adapted itself for growing tourist numbers, but this is still a classic Salta experience. Smartly dressed staff will show you to your table and present you with a menu consisting of local dishes which haven’t changed for generations. The attractive interiors and extensive wine lists make this a great night for every visitor.

We were originally going to go for steak at Doña Salta given it’s great reviews but when we got there although there was a queue and a waiting list of about 30 mins we found the atmosphere in the restaurant to be severely lacking and moved on. It seemed empty even though there was a wait on tables. I can’t comment on the food though, it could be very nice.

Gastronomic tourism is another of the many alternatives of the city. One of the typical meals most sought after by visitors are the salteñas empanadas. “ Doña Salta” is a restaurant that does not go unnoticed, there are served traditional clay baked empanadas accompanied by “ yasgua ”, a kind of spicy sauce prepared from locoto chili and tomato.

Recommended by many, this traditional Salta restaurant has many indigenous menu items that I had not previously seen in Argentina. Their delicious tamales were completely different than the tamales we were used to in Mexico. Another classical dish humita (steamed corn husks filled with cheese) was a less successful dish for us.

If that hasn’t put you off dinner, don’t miss Doña Salta (Cordoba 46) for authentic Andean food – the locro (Andean stew) is amazing. Finally, finish the night listening to some of the best folk music in Salta at La Casona del Molino (Luis Burela 1).

On several evenings here we headed to Doña Salta (Cordoba 46), which serves high end traditional cuisine. Their locro is stunning. One celebrity who has been famously spotted here is movie star Matt Damon, who married a waitress from Salta.

The most popular place in town is Doña Salta, a large eatery just off the main square where the waiters wear kitschy uniforms. They do make a mean humita but not our favourite empanadas in town. For those head to El Buen Gusto.

To try the very best of these dishes, head to Adobe Cocina Regional, with tables overlooking Plaza 9th de Julio, or just two blocks away is the popular Doña Salta serving up their very best to locals and visitors alike.
