Tucked away in the charming Rotermann Quarter in the historic Wheat Mill building is our first suggestion, RØST. A Scandinavian-inspired roastery and sourdough bakery, RØST makes all of their coffee from Estonian roasted beans. Although we are recommending coffee shops, we can also suggest grabbing a pastry (trust us, you won’t regret it!) All delicately spiced and flavoured, the warming smell of freshly baked bread and sugar pastries will hit you as soon as you walk in, and you’ll not be able to resist.

Another spot for coffee in the former industrial area known as the Rotermann Quarter is RØST, a small bakery that also serves coffee from The Brick and La Cabra. I ordered a macchiato with a Brazilian espresso from The Brick and as a freshly baked batch of cinnamon buns had just emerged from the oven, it would have been foolish not to indulge. Both the coffee and my sweet treat tasted good and it was nice to seek refuge from the biting wind inside the small, cosy cafe.

If you arrive in Tallinn on the red-eye ferry from Finland, the first thing you’ll want to look for once you disembark is a delicious breakfast. A short, pleasant walk will take you from the ferry terminal to the RØST Bakery, a small Scandinavian-inspired sourdough bakery. It’s located in a former mill in the so-called “Stalker’s passage,“ the recently renovated part of Rotermann, a historic district that lies between the Old Town and the harbor.

Top of everyone’s list should be the wonderful café and bakery named Røst which makes the best baked goods in town. Beyond Scandi-inspired Røst, Rotermann is home to so many new and different eateries these days that they can even host their own cross between a food festival and restaurant week. As for me, my dining choices tend to range from the kosher café named Ruby (closed Saturdays) to Kaks Kokka (Two Cooks) along the factory’s outer edge.

But here, having tip-toed and hopped through the snowy, icy sludge of Estonia's capital city on a cold January morning, RØST Bakery is everything you want, just how you want it. To start my day off right, I like a good coffee, usually accompanied by fruit, and on extra-special days, with a pastry. This was the best breakfast I had all trip, and we were lucky enough to score a couple of stools to sit on and leaf through the nearby magazines.

RØST Bakery: if you're in Rotermanni, it's worth a visit, though neither coffee nor pastry is top of Tallinn. You might have trouble finding a seat but if you do, the bun and coffee will go perfectly together with a quick coffee meeting.

You can wake me up in the middle of the night for a cinnamon bun fresh out of the oven. And for the best cardamom and cinnamon buns in Tallinn, Røst Bakery is the place to be. Locals love this spot as well, so it’s usually busy.

RØST Bakery coffee shop and bakery win the award for the best milk-based coffee. Their flat whites are made to the standard of my Australian husband. They serve fresh baked goods, with their specialty being a cinnamon twist.

As soon as you get off the ferry, run don’t walk to ROST Bakery. It’s the best bakery in Tallinn. They make the most delicious cinnamon buns, cardamom buns, and rhubarb buns.
