Me mentiin sunnuntaina ilman pöytävarausta klo 11.30 ja onnistuttiin saamaan ikkunapöytä. Mutta porukkaa oli kyllä paljon, joten kannattaa harkita varauksen tekemistä etukäteen. #brunssi #aamiainen #kahvila #helsinki

Reviews Summary

Café Engel is celebrated for its warm service, delicious traditional Finnish cuisine, and stunning views of Senate Square. Diners rave about the salmon soup and desserts, though some note that the ambiance might have lost some of its former charm over the years, and occasionally the bread served with meals can be a bit hard.

"Lives up to the hype! Warm and attentive service, delicious food and a wonderful view of Senate Square - what more could you want! We came here twice during our short time in Helsinki."

Louisa Ubeja

"If you come to Helsinki and have no idea where to go, then I would happily suggest Café Engel ! Close to the Cathedral, it's a lovely little place, with delicious food - and I have gone multiple times with friends. I would also heartily recommend their salmon soup, my personal fave !"

Tessa MOÏOLI

"When I came here before 11 or 10, I could not order salmon soup. So I ate a pie and coffee first and came back after 10 or 11. I am not sure about the exact time. But the food was so good and the vibe was great. I miss the salmon soup and meat balls. But the bread which comes up with food was a little bit hard to chew for me. Hahahaaaa
It was goood!
P.s. I like the pickles:)"

Named for the architect Carl Ludvig Engel, this café on Senate Square serves traditional lunch fare, and it's also open for breakfast, with porridge, muesli, croissants, cheeses, eggs, and fruit on the menu. Lunch portions are hearty—you can fill up on salmon soup, meatballs, reindeer stew, or the cold smoked salmon sandwich; for a lighter snack, try a savory Karelian pie (karjalanpiirakka) or one of the smaller open-face sandwiches. Locals stop in for coffee, wine, and desserts, which include seasonal treats such as lingonberry cheesecake, fruit tarts, and an excellent Sacher torte.

A beautiful café on the edge of Senate Square in one of the oldest stone houses of Helsinki. The ground floor was built in place of a pipe factory in 1765. In the 1830s, when two floors were added, architect Carl Ludvig Engel (1778–1840) gave the building an attractive, Empire-style facade.
