Named for the architect Carl Ludvig Engel, this café on Senate Square serves traditional lunch fare, and it's also open for breakfast, with porridge, muesli, croissants, cheeses, eggs, and fruit on the menu. Lunch portions are hearty—you can fill up on salmon soup, meatballs, reindeer stew, or the cold smoked salmon sandwich; for a lighter snack, try a savory Karelian pie (karjalanpiirakka) or one of the smaller open-face sandwiches. Locals stop in for coffee, wine, and desserts, which include seasonal treats such as lingonberry cheesecake, fruit tarts, and an excellent Sacher torte.

Cafe Engel: This might be the most centric café in Helsinki, just across the famous white cathedral. It is an old café loved by locals and tourists because somewhow it managed to protect its atmosphere, Servis was fast and friendly and you can refill your filter caffee while watching the tourists and city go by in front of the Cathedral. A beautiful café on the edge of Senate Square in one of the oldest stone houses of Helsinki. The ground floor was built in place of a pipe factory in 1765. In the 1830s, when two floors were added, architect Carl Ludvig Engel (1778–1840) gave the building an attractive, Empire-style facade.

Café Engel is located right next to Senate Square but it isn't too touristy. They serve breakfast combos for different tastes, like the French combo (comes with a croissant, of course) or eggs and bacon combo. Engel is a bit pricey but the location is great and the vibe is cozy.

Although in a ‘touristy’ area, it’s a peaceful venue before the lunch on weekdays. Engel is a charming place to admire Helsinki Cathedral while enjoying one of the delicious breakfast sets. Coffee refills are free.
