Reviews Summary

L'Agape offers a sophisticated French dining experience with impeccably prepared dishes and attentive service, praised for its value for money. While many rave about the creative tasting menus and fresh, seasonal ingredients, some reviews mention minor issues with dessert underwhelm or occasional front-of-house service hiccups.

"WONDERFUL quintessential French experience. My husband and I enjoyed the 5 course menu. We also had an aperitif and bottle of white wine. We thought the prices were quite reasonable for the quality of food and lovely atmosphere. The restaurant is cozy and romantic in the front. It is larger and brighter in the back. Service felt a bit rushed at first but leveled out through the courses. Husband said foie gras was the best he's had in France! I thought the fish (John Dory) was the best bite of the night. Both desserts were excellent-- sweet but not too sweet. Although the restaurant has an upscale feeling, you can wear nice jeans and sneakers (at least during the week when we were there). Staff was friendly too, despite my husband and I not speaking much French. Highly recommend."

"Made reservations for a Thursday night. Food was very good! Each dish was made very well and the flavors all complemented each other. The owners serve you and prepare the food and you can tell they take great pride in the prep and their patrons. Highly recommend a stop here. For 100 euros, the seven course menu plus wine is a great value in Avignon. The one thing to take L’Agape up another notch is to improve the by the glass and bottle selections. There is only one white, rose, red, and sparkling to choose from by the glass. The by the bottle list is above average."

Luke Kordick

"We had an excellent lunch at L"Agape on our final day in Avignon. Everything was first-rate - the food, service, wine list, and the atmosphere. They were very accommodating regarding my wife's allergies to beef and beef dairy. Highly recommend."

The Best Restaurants In Avignon, France

With industrial decor reminiscent of a garage (a nod to Michelin’s other raison d’être, perhaps) and a terrace shaded by plane trees in the square opposite, L’Agapé serves a creative menu devised by passionate chef Julien Gleize. He launched the restaurant with his wife, Anne, in 2014 after years spent working in Michelin-star restaurants across Provence. Below bare walls and light bulbs, his modern twists on French classics are delicious to graze on, as are the desserts and bread made on site by their pâtisserie chef.

Restaurants in The Vaucluse

At this gastropub hot spot in the heart of the city, chef Julien Gleize applies light, playful, modern touches to dishes that are steeped in French tradition, made with local ingredients, and beautifully presented. Options might include rabbit farci perfumed with wild cèpes and served over a cloud of whipped potatoes and shallot confit or wild salmon caramelized in olive oil with watercress, black sesame seeds, and luscious cream of corn.

What to see and do

Le Goût du Jour (12) on Rue St-Etienne would be in my top three (legoutdujour84.com; dinner menus from £28) as would L’Agape (13) on Place des Corps-Saints (restaurant-agape-avignon.com; dinner menus from £29). And then the little and lovely Atelier de Belinda (14), also on Place des Corps-Saints (0033 490 826953; menus from £18).

Our Top Food Recommendations

We had lunch on a weekday afternoon at L’Agape, a cozy restaurant with relaxed décor yet elegant service. Shortly after we arrived, the restaurant filled every table with a delighted lunch crowd of all ages enjoying food à la carte and on the menus. We opted for the three-course menu rather than the day’s lunch menu and I delighted in house-made bread, a chicken and mushroom starter, a fresh fish filet, and a deconstructed, cracker-style dessert.
