A favorite haunt of Edith Piaf and her lover, world champion boxer Marcel Cerdan, this once glamorous restaurant was given a new life in 2018. The Belle Epoque establishment was reopened as a bouillon, a type of restaurant popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that serves simple French classics at low prices. Luckily, the revamp only extended to the kitchen–its lavish dining room, with gigantic mirrors, sensual Mucha-inspired painted tiles, and soaring stained glass ceilings was preserved.

On a drizzly night in Paris, a crowd spilled out the door of Bouillon Julien and onto the slick sidewalk lining the rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis. The lure was a bargain-priced meal that promised to be surprising for both its quality and reasonable price: less than 20 euros, or about $23, for a three-course dinner with a glass of wine.

For traditional cuisine, Bouillon Julien is unbeatable with sumptuous art nouveau decor and a genuinely inexpensive menu; eggs mayonnaise €3.90, beer-braised choucroute €11. Just be prepared to queue for a table. Further up the street, Le Daily Syrien Veggie offers tasty mezze, while Urfa Dürüm’s hand-rolled wraps take some beating.

I recently had lunch at Bouillon Julien, good and reasonably priced. And the decor is lovely, decorated in the Art Nouveau style. Afterwards I decided to walk part of the way back to my hotel.
