While I’m a loyalist to Breizh Café’s sun-soaked outpost on rue Vieille du Temple in the Marais, the Brittany-based chain sits on charming corners throughout the city, butting up against the Canal St Martin and sprawling over a wide intersection just around the corner from Bistrot Paul Bert. Here, buckwheat galettes come in savory and sweet varieties, which together make for the perfect lunch: I tend to go for the Complète Oignons, with a sunny-side-up egg, comté, artisanal ham, and a mouth-watering spread of onions caramelized in cider, followed by a simple butter-sugar crepe.

It’s probably my favorite affordable, casual restaurant in Paris. The first time I went, I was alone on a work trip in Paris, starving and indecisive about where to eat, trying to find somewhere with gluten free options, and as I was wandering around the Latin Quarter, I stumbled into tis creperie, not knowing I was about to hit gold. Every time I’ve been back to Paris since, I make a point of stopping in here for a delicious, gluten-free savory crepe (and obviously, a sweet crepe for dessert).

What puts Breizh cafe ahead of others is that they consistently churn out perfectly cooked galettes (savoury crepes) as well as sweet crepes that are all slightly modern twists of Breton classics. For example, they add a hint of ginger to their caramel sauce or use butter infused with seaweed sourced from Brittany to give their crepes an edge.
