Stepping into Café de Flore is like stepping into a time capsule, into an era when the Left Bank was a bohemian enclave for the likes of Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway. The interior—red booths, mahogany, polished brass railings—has changed little since the Art Deco period, but anyone who is anyone knows that the best seats in the house are actually out on the sidewalk (and thankfully the famous terrasse is open at full capacity again), where the people watching can't be beat and the city's café iconic culture is at its finest. Although afternoons are best for perching on a table outside and enjoying the pulse of Boulevard Saint-Germain, there's also a vibrant after-dark scene.

Café de Flore is not only popular for its food offering; it’s entwined with Paris’s literary history, too. The venue has been associated with The Prix de Flore since 1994, a prestigious French literary prize that entitles its winners to enjoy a glass of Pouilly-Fumé at the café every day for a year. So, it’s quite possible that you’ll be dining at a table near the next big thing.

Live your own version of "Midnight in Paris" by sipping coffee in the old stomping grounds of the Lost Generation. Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Montparnasse are dotted with Art Deco cafés once frequented by Hemingway and Picasso. But probably you will want to go to the Cafe de Flor and the Brassierie Lipp or Deux Magots on Blvd St Germain for a drink, despite the fact that they are more expensive because after all, how could you not hang out in the places where Hemingway and Sartre spent much of their time?. It's OK. Just because every American tourist in the world goes to these three places, that does not mean it is not a cool thing to do. Another better choice is the funky and faded elegance of the Cafe Panis, right down from Shakespeare and Company and across from the Cathedral of Notre Dame which is more reasonably priced and has also been a favorite of writers, poets and artists of the past.

One of the chicest places to go for coffee in Paris, the Café de Flore on the Saint Germain des Près, I love sitting out on the terrace here sipping house favorites : Champagne, thick French hot chocolate and perfect espresso.
