Since its opening in 1930 – making it one of the oldest cafes in Reims – until the present day, the Café du Palais has been entertaining patrons in its historic city center establishment. The walls at this 1930s restaurant are crammed with gilt-edged mirrors, golden cherubs, and old paintings, while crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling, which itself is topped by a magnificent Art Deco glass roof signed by Jacques Simon. The café is popular among locals, so reserve a table in advance (request one inside as the terrace looks out over a tramline).

It’s busy with antiques, art and appealing clutter, but the elegant stained glass ceiling brings calm. The food is excellent too – the kids loved their playful lasagne and the French classics served to the adults were flawless. We recommend the duck confit.

When we go to Reims we go for lunch, coffee or an aperitif at the Cafe de Palais, a great place for a plat du jour and a spot of people watching. For a really French dinner go to Chez Max in Epernay, family-run, lovely atmosphere and good home cooking.
