Reviews Summary
Comptoir Breizh Café is highly praised for its original and delicious crepes and galettes, made with exceptional ingredients and presented with a unique Japanese flair. The open kitchen and extensive cider selection are also significant draws. However, some diners have found the dining space uncomfortable or too cramped, and service can occasionally be slow or lacking in explanation.
"Wow, I dreamed of coming here after reading the books on crêpes and galettes, and I was not disappointed. Everything was not only beautiful, but the crepes and galettes were mind-blowing. We enjoyed this delicious family lunch so much, everyone loved every single dish. Also the cider was delicious!!!!"

"Despite of their more interesting combination of ingredients, the galette wasn’t as good as expected for the price in terms of flavor and quantity compared to other restaurants in the area.
About the atmosphere, the dinning space wasn’t comfortable or spacious. The service was quick and lacked of explanations when we asked for recommendations.
Maybe the strength of the restaurant lies in their variety of wines and ciders, more than on the food. However, the cider was served open on the counter instead of on the table, and they didn’t wait for us to taste it."

"Fantastic small restaurant specializing in Breton gallettes and crepes. I'm not an expert, but I think they extend traditional dishes slightly with different ingredients. For example, I had one with chorizo. That said there is no question for me that the execution is excellent. Definitely the best gallettes I've ever eaten (again, small sample size). I did not try the sweet crepes, but I would be surprised if they were not top notch as well. My only regret was I did not try the seaweed butter. At least so I could say I did.
They also have an extensive catalog of ciders. The server guided me to a brut that was excellent.
Speaking of the service, they were extremely friendly and patient with my pathetic attempts at using french words in a random order. I felt welcome as a solo diner seated at the bar, which was appreciated.
I did not have a reservation, but it seems like that would be a good idea. I thought given the density of creperies in Saint-Malo it would not be necessary, but next time I'll make one just to be sure.
If you are in Saint-Malo intra-muros (inside the walls?) and need some Briton food, highly recommend.
Bon appetit!"

Restaurants in Brittany
Not all crêpes are created equal, and you'll taste the difference at Bertrand Larcher's original Cancale flagship (his Paris outpost is the city's go-to crêperie). Traditional crispy buckwheat galettes are given a modern gourmet twist with the best locally sourced ingredients—organic eggs and vegetables, artisanal cheeses, local oysters and seafood, free-range meats, smoked or seaweed butter from the St-Malo–based dairy superstar Jean-Yves Bordier—and the tender white-flour dessert crêpes are to die for. Do not say no to the salted-caramel version, a world-famous recipe launched in Brittany, or the classic crêpe suzette served flambéed.
10 of the best restaurants in Brittany, France | Brittany holidays
The ubiquitous Breton galettes (buckwheat pancakes) and crêpes are a good bet in most places, but the renowned Comptoir Breizh takes these local specialities to another level. Their delicious golden galettes are filled with everything from simple local ham and decadent butter to more sophisticated andouille sausage and confit onions cooked in cider. The restaurant’s links to Japan go beyond its adjacent sushi restaurant; so loved by the Japanese is the Breizh Café there’s a branch in Tokyo (as well as in Cancale and Paris).

Otonali, a Japanese-Inspired Restaurant in Brittany
Otonali, which means “next door” in Japanese, sits next to Breizh Café St.-Malo. It was designed by Guillaume Terver, interior architect at Le LAD in Paris, who interpreted Larcher’s passion for raw ingredients with an understated dining room of black, wood, and clay. A large open kitchen takes center stage, while communal tables and bar seating extend the informality of Larcher’s crêperies.

Le Comptoir BREIZH Café se situe au centre de la vieille ville, à proximité de la Demeure du Corsaire, l’un des plus fascinants musées de Saint-Malo. Breizh Café is the result of a stroke of genius: the idea of mixing Breton traditions with the Japanese flair for presentation. Inviting modern decor with a counter facing the open kitchen, as in Japan. Local ingredients (100% organic buckwheat, oysters from Cancale, butter from Bordier) and a few contemporary touches, such as buckwheat pancakes rolled up like maki.
A perfect day trip to Saint Malo, France
If you are looking for more than just oysters, the Breizh Cafe restaurant has an interesting concept. The Breton founder had lived in Japan and creates Japanese-Breton fusion food that is nothing if not creative. They serve traditional galettes (buckwheat crepes), sushi, and everything in between, including galette sushi which I just had to try.
