Reviews Summary

Shavi Lomi is celebrated for its charming, home-like atmosphere and creative take on Georgian cuisine. Diners rave about the unique ambiance, delicious starters like baked beets and mushrooms, and hearty mains such as Shkmeruli. While many praise the attentive, English-speaking service and lovely courtyard, some find it a bit pricey or note that it caters more to tourists, occasionally leading to minor issues with seasoning or pricing.

"Beautiful restaurant, popular with locals and foreign tourists (like us!).

We enjoyed it so much we went three times in our five days in Tbilisi.

We dined in the old house twice, beautiful venue and had a late lunch outside in the garden one day before an overnight train. We loved the garden, very attractive place.

The cats will leave you alone if you don't like cats, we do so we made friends with them.

Service is spot on, friendly, smiling and will give you advice on the dishes. We were welcomed back like old friends 🧡

The food:- stand-out dishes are the beef shank (we shared it as its big) and the eggplant starter with walnut sauce but all dishes were very interesting to us and our UK pallete.

They also let us taste the wine before we committed to buying a bottle (we chose wine that was available by the glass).

Overall, a lovely restaurant, we walked up rather than using a taxi, we saw local bakeries on the walk which we found interesting.

Away from the tourist drag and whilst it's probably a bit more expensive we felt the quality in service, atmosphere and food was well worth it.

If you read about Georgia and their recent history then you'll approve of their silent protest made on your receipt.

You need to book for the garden. If it rains, then don't worry, as everyone is moved indoors."

"Such a charming restaurant!! As soon as you step in, you feel immersed in a warm retro-style and organic ambiance. Every item and detail in the interior is intriguing and aesthetically stimulating. The music was very aligned with the environment and complimented the warmth and romantic feel. Now, the food was nothing less than the ambiance and the flavors and presentation were all- senses fulfilling. We had seen this restaurant on the recommended list and trusted our host and went straight in to try it. Although is says that it is open till 2 am, however they actually close at 12. Plan to spend a couple of hours to fully embrace the magic this place has to offer. Will definitely be back as soon as we revisit Georgia :)"

Nour

Humble Magic in Georgian Capital’s Restaurant Renaissance

When the chef Meriko Gubeladze opened Shavi Lomi, she recalled that Tbilisi was “starving for small, homey restaurants with good food.” That was 2011, and the quality of Georgian cuisine — known for its lavish use of spices and aromatic herbs influenced by travelers along the Silk Road — wasn’t the problem, but the uninviting establishments and menu selections — hangovers from the cookie-cutter days of the Soviet era — were. Artery-clogging khachapuri, the cheesy bread often likened to pizza, still tempted.

This cozy venue is adorned with vintage tableware, old carpets, and utensils Georgians used dozens of decades ago in their household. At Shavi Lomi, white-linen cloths and chandeliers are replaced by car-boot-sale furniture and flea-market china, meaning an evening at this inconspicuous little restaurant is an experience akin to eating at your best friend’s house (albeit if they were an award-winning chef). Opened by a local celebrity chef and three of her friends, what was once a secret kept among Tbilisi’s in-the-know has become a culinary hotspot, making its 10 tables some of the most covetable seats in the city. The cellar restaurant pays homage to Georgia’s beloved artist, Niko Pirosmani, renowned for his plentiful, hearty feasting scenes, appropriately plating up meals to match.

Designer Tamara Kopaliani also lists the restaurant at the Stamba Hotel, which has everything from a casino and a coffee shop, to a cocktail lounge and a rooftop pool, hoiused in a seriously beautiful former publishing house, as one of her favourite places, while The Kitchen and Keto & Kote rank high on her list when it comes to traditional Georgian food.

Georgia’s greatest gift to plant-based cooking is pkhali, the family of colorful vegetable spreads made with everything from spinach to leeks to beets to carrots. If it’s kicking around your vegetable drawer, you can probably pkhali [verb] it. At Shavi Lomi, a candlelit Tbilisi institution where the floorboards creak and cats roam the courtyard, you get the full pkhali experience: multiple spreads rainbowed alongside one another, plus all the traditional accoutrements (cheese, corncakes, and pickled bladdernut blossoms called jonjoli).
