House of Small Wonder

Opened in 2014, House of Small Wonder is the sister restaurant of a Brooklyn-based joint of the same name. Its culinary concept follows in the footsteps of the original location, incorporating Japanese influences with fresh, flavourful, comfort food. Using organic, locally sourced ingredients and unique Japanese flavours where possible, the menu is an exciting mix of classic brunch specials, homemade bread, croissants and fusion Japanese dishes.

We have told you many times that Berlin is the city where you will find food for all tastes, budgets and options, but it is also the city of the avant-garde and trend, and one of the biggest trends today is the renowned brunch, of course at Like the big cities of the world like New York or London, Berlin has one of the best places to try these breakfast foods. The cosmopolitan nature of the city means that these types of restaurants spread to all neighborhoods, but the most famous is House of small wonder (or better known by its acronym HOSW), located in the heart of Berlin and with a concept inspired by the Japanese tradition has been able to gain a space since 2015. Be warned that as of July 2021, we have been told by the owners of HOSW that the restaurant has been temporarily (re)located to the historic Jewish Girls’ School on Auguststrasse, not far from its original home, amazing visit.

Located in Mitte around the corner from a number of must-see tourist attractions, this beautiful spot is the place to go for a decadent brunch in a seriously Instagrammable setting. The brunch menu is only small, but each dish is a feast for both your eyes and your taste buds, offering a subtle Japanese twist on most of the items including wasabi-infused Hollandaise on their version of an egg’s Benedict.

Genauer gesagt die geschwungeneTreppe, die man ständig als sehr pittoresken Hintergrund sieht. Doch genau diese fehlt derzeit, denn nach Querelen mit dem Neueigentümer der Immobilie in der Johannisstraße, in der das alte Café beheimatet war, bendet residiert man derzeit temporär in der ehemaligen jüdischen Mädchenschule in der Auguststraße.

The House of Small Wonders was always mentioned as the most Instagrammable cafe in Berlin due to its stunning staircase in the middle of the cafe. Unfortunately, since they moved locations, they haven’t rebuilt the staircase in their new place, so you won’t be able to find it there. However, regardless of the staircase, it looks beautiful inside and has amazing food – it was the best brunch we had in Berlin!

House of Small Wonder in Mitte is THE brunch place for trendy Berliners looking for Instagrammable Japanese-American brunch cuisine. The menu offers an ala-carte option, but the much better value is the brunch set where you will get the choice of 4 brunch dishes, a hot drink and orange juice for only €22. The dishes in the brunch set are slightly smaller than the menu options, but it is still a TON of food!

Find a seat among the house plants and settle into the House of Small Wonder for brunch or lunch with a Japanese twist. The all-day brunch menu features an avocado smash with sesame oil on zucchini bread topped with sprouts, wakame, shichimi and poached eggs. Lunchtime signatures include udon carbonara, and mentaiko spaghetti with spicy cod’s roe, cream, butter, soy sauce, shiso, nori seaweed and scallops.

The House of Small Wonder first opened in Williamsburg and then brought its typical casual mix to the Berlin branch.There are freshly prepared breakfast specialities made from local products - with a Japanese touch. Plus a cool ambience in the former Jewish girls' school with lots of plants and floral wallpaper. No wonder the House of Small Wonder is one of the most popular breakfast locations in Berlin.

This house truly is full of wonders, not only because you will love the interior, that is done with lots of consideration without looking overly styled. Eine schmale Wendeltreppe, umgeben von riesigen Grünpflanzen, führt in das House of Small Wonder in der Johannisstraße. Das Restaurant mit dem urbanen New-York-Flair liegt in einer ruhigen Seitenstraße zur Friedrichstraße, direkt gegenüber vom Friedrichstadt-Palast. Mit viel Holz und viel Grün entführt das Café seine Gäste sofort in eine andere Welt.

Leider zur Zeit temporär geschlossen, aber auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert, wenn es wieder öffnet: Das House of Small Wonder in der Johannisstraße. Dabei handelt es sich um ein japanisches Café mit liebevoller Einrichtung im Stile eine Wintergartens. Jede Menge Braun- und Grüntöne durch Holz und Pflanzen laden zur Motivjagd ein.

If you google House of Small Wonder you will see why it is considered one of the most Instagrammable cafes Berlin. The entrance, atmosphere and design will make you want to go there and have even just a coffee but be able to take pictures on that staircase. Of course, as per Alessia’s personal itinerary, we couldn’t miss it.

In New York we visited the original version of this café in Brooklyn, in Berlin it’s located near the Friedrichstadtpalast. First you fall in love with this place because of the staircase, and afterwards because of their food with an asian twist. Comfort food, Japanese Tea and poached eggs with wasabi hollandaise.

As a sucker for cute and quirky cafes, House of Small Wonder had to be included on my list. Whilst there are plenty of cool cafes in the city, there is something pretty special about this place. I love the stylish entrance and the range of vivid colours here, alongside the different structures and textures.

Instagrammers love House of Small Wonder, a cafe tucked away near Museum Island filled with plants and reclaimed wood. The entryway to the cafe features a gorgeous spiral staircase that leads up to the actual cafe seating. Menus in the form of small, antique books are delivered to your table by happy staff.
