Reviews Summary

Lovis offers a unique dining experience in a former prison, praised for its stunning ambiance and creative, vegetable-forward German cuisine by Chef Sophia Rudolph. While many enjoy the tasting menus, cocktails, and wine pairings, some diners feel certain dishes lack the 'wow' factor for the price, citing issues with seasoning or flavor balance in a few courses. Despite mixed feedback on food consistency, the overall atmosphere and service are frequently highlighted as exceptional.

"the atmosphere was amazing, knowing some of the history of the place. we loved it. the selection of tastes in both the bar and the restaurant was absolutely masterful. we chose the 4 course menu and the wines were selected accordingly. new favourite wine btw (le grand fumé) the different layers and compositions of the various tastes were just artfully arranged. the few hours we stayed here were very well spent.
this place made a lasting impression."

"This could have Ben a 5/5.
Drinks where amazing and the wine pairing good.

Small things like very dry bread and some courses lacking that little extra takes away from a perfect score. A scallop on the leek pure would have made all the difference.

But the facility is amazing. And I would recommend a visit. Do have some cocktails un the bar before, great concept and execution."

David Mariasdotter

"Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Berlin!
As an interior designer loved the lighting and big windows with the full mirror walls.. food was amazing , too.

An ex-women’s prison may not scream ‘romance’ but there’s something about Lovis that lends itself to candle-lit dinners for two. Hidden behind a discreet door on Charlottenburg's busy Kantstrasse, a 19th-century courtyard blooming with wildflowers and clambering shrubs leads to a gabled dining room with a canopy of twinkling lights. My friend Sophia Rudolph spent her formative years in Lyon, France’s “official” culinary capital, and went on to work with legend Alain Ducasse, so naturally, her cooking is rooted in classical French technique.

11 particularly beautiful restaurants in Berlin

The Berlin architects Armand Grüntuch and Almut Grüntuch-Ernst are experienced in bringing spaces steeped in history into the present with sensitivity and subtlety. They have proven this with the Jewish Girls' School in Auguststraße and now with one of the most successful restaurant spaces in Berlin: the Lovis, a former women's prison. Without ignoring the past, they have transformed the clear forms of the old Wilhelminian-style building into a place that is as aesthetic as it is poetic.

Bar chef Nils Lutterbach creates innovative and classic concoctions at Lovis. When Sophia Rudolph took over the kitchen at the newly opened Lovis at the end of 2021, there was huge interest. Foodies saw it as the "next big thing", partly because of the location: a former women's prison, lavishly converted into the Hotel Wilmina with 44 rooms and suites, a roof terrace, library, spa and restaurant.
