Leading the speciality coffee charge in Europe since 2010, The Barn has a reputation for serving some of the best coffee in Europe (genuinely: it won the award for Best Independent European Coffee Shop in 2018). And with multiple locations all over town, there’s probably an outpost close to where you’re sightseeing. Word of caution: the baristas will only serve each coffee the way they believe it’s best prepared – and they’re not keen on sugar.

One of Berlin's original third-wave coffee joints, this tiny café in the heart of Mitte’s gallery district serves up superlative hand-brewed coffees (always served black) and espresso drinks with trendy add-ons like oat milk, alongside a small but tasty selection of baked goods and sandwiches. There's limited indoor seating and laptops are banned, so this is a better place to sit outside when the weather's nice or to get your coffee to go.

The Barn is a Berlin coffee shop institution that you should definitely not miss: The roastery and taste lab in Prenzlauer Berg is a great place for a quick espresso and a good sniff of freshly roasted coffee, the coffee shop in Berlin Mitte is great spot for a flawless flat white and people watching. To make a change from my American road trip, today’s Coffee Spot takes us all the way back to early May and my trip to Berlin, when I visited a rather unique establishment, Café Kranzler. This Berlin institution can trace its roots back to 1825 and is easily recognisable in its current incarnation, in a rotunda on top of the Kranzler-Eck shopping complex on Kurfürstendamm. In 2016, The Barn took over the running of the iconic coffee shop, thus keeping the Café Kranzler name alive.

It’s almost easier to list cafes that don’t allow dogs than list out all the places we’ve taken Toro (the main one I can think of is The Barn, which though it has great coffee and pastries has a very explicit No Dogs Inside sign on the door.) We always try to ask first before bringing him in, just to be polite and not assume anything. Generally, though, unless a place has this sign below on the door, they tend to be cool with dogs as long as they’re well-behaved and not muddy.

In arty Mitte, one can find the cleanest and coolest ‘barn’ in the city, and sample some of the best coffee Berlin offers. The Barn say of themselves: ‘Our philosophy is to source and roast some of the best coffees available in the world. We work with sustainability and traceability in mind and try to deliver quality coffees that best represent their origin and natural flavours.’ There is no doubt when you enter that coffee brewing is serious business here.

Some of our favorites included St. Oberholz at Rosenthaler Straße 72a; great for people watching right at Rosenthaler Platz, The Barn in Mitte at Auguststraße 58 for best Flat White we’ve had in Berlin so far, Bonanza Coffee Roasters on Oderberger Straße 35 in Prenzlauer Berg for truly excellent coffee, Milch & Zucker at Core Tex Records 37, Café am Engelbecken on Michaelkirchplatz, for one of the most scenic (outdoor) cafes in Kreuzberg.

Why do we love them?. Not only do they serve the most delicious hand brews and espresso drinks, but they also feature a coffee-based special signature drink every month.

They’re not too sweet – slightly salty actually, allowing for ham or Bergkäse fillings, although we prefer them “natur”.

Terroir Berlin’s Arlene Stein says “The Barn is a fundamentalist institution of roasters. They take coffee very seriously, so you need to pay attention.”. The Barn has two outposts in Berlin: the original cosy and cute coffee shop at Augustrasse and Grosse Hamburger Strasse and its newer and more spacious cousin, the sweet-smelling roastery in Prenzlauer Berg.

The Barn café and roastery is, perhaps, the most famous of the Berlin hipster coffee shops. An institution for the specialty craft coffee, where locals and tourists alike gather to drink a lighter and more flavorful brew. At the Barn, they work closely with each individual coffee farmer, sourcing for quality, cleanliness, sustainability, and traceability.

An unmissable stop for real coffee connoisseurs, The Barn, while not quite as well-known as other places, serves up a seriously killer brew to write home about. Sit in the window with an espresso, or opt for a perfectly roasted flat white. They even cater for vegans looking for a creamy caffeine fix, serving coffee with oat milk as an alternative option.

They roast their own beans and offer an approach similar to that of ´slow food´, but adapted to coffee. The Barn also boasts a range of mouth-watering cakes that you won't be able to resist!. It is a perfect place for coffee enthusiasts, prices being a bit over the average, because the food and drinks are organic and high quality.

Berlin has two cafes in Berlin: its large roasting house on the border of Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte and its smaller café in Berlin’s Jewish quarter. They take their coffee very seriously here. Laptops and prams are not permitted and the sugar jar is hidden at the back to encourage customers to admire the true taste of the coffee.

The Barn is one of the best-known specialty coffee roasteries in Berlin and their single origin beans are sold worldwide. The Café Kranzler location is one of my favourite coffee shops in the western part of Berlin. When the sun is out you can sit on the terrace and take a break from busy city life to watch people pass by.

THE BARN Coffee Roasters is one of the most well known coffee roasters of Europe. It all started in 2010 with its first location in the neighbourhood of Mitte by owner Ralf Rüller. Since then 12 coffee bars have opened in Berlin, and a few more around the world from Mallorca to Seoul.

The Barn, founded in 2010, is the biggest chain of specialty cafés in Berlin, with over ten establishments in the city. The chain holds the «Best Specialty Coffee Roaster Europe&Middle East 2019» title and offers, besides coffee, their trademark muffins and biscuits.

Each coffee shop is individual and customized to the area where the café is situated. They have their roastery now in Voltastraße in Wedding. The Barn recently opened their first café outside of Germany, in Dubai.

Without mentioning The Barn this list would have been incomplete. Behind the name hides one of the best special roasteries in Germany. And in this place it truly is all about special coffee.
