For real down-home German cooking, few places in Cologne compare to this time-honored brew house in the shadow of the Dom. It's often crowded, but the mood's fantastic. Bold frescoes on the vaulted ceilings establish that mood, and the authentically Teutonic experience is completed by such dishes as Hämmchen (pork knuckle).

After enjoying the sunset, we needed to find somewhere for dinner, and I’d written this place down as it’s a great traditional place to enjoy German food and of course, Cologne’s signature beer, Kolsch. I will admit it’s a bit touristy, but I thought it was a really good place to go and there were definitely a few locals around as well (evidenced by plenty of football scarves – I doubt many tourists travel to support Koln FC). David went for a bockwurst which is really just a plain German sausage and I think he wished he’d gone for something a bit less bland and dry!

Just a short walk from the iconic Cologne Cathedral, the Brauhaus FRÜH am Dom is a cool and traditional German beer hall right in the heart of the city. Boasting tonnes of old-world memorabilia inside, this Cologne bar has been a long-standing favourite in the city since opening in the early 1900s. Brauhaus Früh is perhaps the most popular biergarten (beer-garden) in Cologne's Old Town. Also known as Früh am Dom for being located directly opposite the Cologne Cathedral, this brewery is named after its first owner, Peter Josef Früh. Converting the building of the former Central Theater and Schützenliesel restaurant, at Am Hof 12, into a top-fermentation facility in 1904 marked the first milestone for Cölner Hofbräu P. Josef Früh KG. Here the beer was brewed right in the cellars.

Just a stone’s throw away from the cathedral, Früh am Dom offers a quintessentially Cologne dining experience. Often bustling with both locals and tourists alike, the establishment’s menu is a testament to the rich culinary tradition of the region. Cologne's first brewery house cellar is opened in the cellar of brewery house FRÜH am Dom. Following the construction of the brewery in the northern outskirts of the city, the medieval vaulted cellars, which were previously used as fermentation and storage spaces of the brewery, were exposed and also used for gastronomy. The Hofbräustuben on the first floor of the former living quarters of Peter Josef Früh and his family opened the same year.

Come to Brauhaus Früh am Dom (Am Hof 12-14) where waiters, known as Köbes, sporting white shirts and black aprons, bring you platefuls of cheap and filling food and small glasses of Kölsch - Cologne's pale fermented beer, the city's favourite 'social lubricant'. Try the centrally located Brauhaus Früh am Dom, where patrons sit - in semi-darkness - on long wooden benches around massive oak tables. This pub also has an in-house sauna!!.

Again in the center of the city beneath the towering Cologne Cathedral, you will find Früh am Dom. This traditional restaurant is housed in a former brewery and serves good old-fashioned German food on three different levels. Besides the main Brauhaus restaurant, you can dine in the vaulted, cozy brewery cellar, or the modern and airy Hof 18 restaurant on the second floor with views of the cathedral.

We didn’t end up eating at Brauhaus Früh am Dom, but it’s one of the busiest and most well-known spots in Cologne, especially for traditional Kölsch beer and hearty German dishes like schnitzel, bratwurst, and sauerkraut. In case you are as unaware as I was before visiting – Kölsch beer is a light and crisp ale brewed in a specific style that’s popular in Cologne and the surrounding region ;0.

It’s a rambling collection of discrete spaces that are almost like beer galleries. Some are dark, some lit by daylight streaming in from large windows, others lit by skylights. I wind my way through the Wappensaal (coat of arms hall) and into a glassed-in room aptly called the Sauna before finding a seat in front of one of the large stained-glass windows opening out onto the square.

For an authentic taste of Cologne, you NEED to head to Früh am Dom, one of Cologne’s oldest breweries, and enjoy a traditional Kölsch beer with their hearty local dishes, like sausages and sauerkraut. The beer hall is over 100 years old and feels as though you’re stepping back in time. I loved the beer-marinaded Pork Knuckle followed by a chunky piece of apple strudel for dessert.

That’s why Brauhaus Früh was established right opposite the majestic landmark back in 1904. In the cellar with its medieval vaulted ceiling, on the first floor overlooking the Heinzelmännchen fountain and beer garden or, in the summer, from the roofed courtyard terrace – wherever you sit, if you appreciate great kölsch, you’ll feel right at home here. Probably the other internationally-known Kolsch producer, Früh’s beer hall was absolutely huge with a number of different rooms and areas (although some are reserved just for diners) along with a beer garden. As the name suggests, it is very close to the Catherdral. We only visited once as it was OK, but we felt there were better places.

Every Cologne resident (and especially every tourist) knows the Früh Brauhaus near the cathedral. It is actually the second largest brauhaus in all of Germany, behind only the Hofbrauhaus in Munich. The main Früh brauhaus is a classic place, sprawling across different buildings and floors with winding hallways and mismatched rooms.

Although some may argue the Früh has become a little 'touristy' because of its popularity, I find it still captures the traditional Cologne spirit.

We had dinner at the beer hall Fruh Ah Dom, just behind the Pixie’s Fountain. This place always looks crowded as you pass through the bar, but at 5:30 there was no wait for a table. It was quite warm inside and we were really bundled up so it took a while to get everyone down to the appropriate layers and seated.

Cologne suffered heavily during World War II, with 90% of the inner-city lying-in ruins by the end of the conflict. This included the main building of Früh's brewhouse, which burned down in February 1944. Früh were more fortunate than other brewers however, as the brewery wasn't entirely destroyed.

There is a saying that “You don’t order a Kölsch, you get it allotted.” This was evident as soon as I stepped foot in Früh Brauhaus. Everyone, and I mean everyone, was holding a miniature glass and supping the local brew. I’m not even sure if any other beverages are available.

The most appetizing plating and best tasting Himmel un Ääd we had was at Früh Brauhaus at Am Hof 12-18. This beer hall is huge and has all sorts of nooks and crannies; after exploring the whole place, we found ourselves a tiny two seat table tucked away in a corner.

on a previous trip to Cologne, but looking back it must have been Brauhaus Sion instead. The latter is just short walk away, so it’s easy to see how the confusion may have arisen. Both outlets are fine examples of a traditional, Cologne beer-house.

Brauhaus FRÜH am Dom – You can’t go to Germany without visiting a Brauhaus!. FRÜH is an old-world restaurant offering homestyle dishes of sausage & potatoes, plus schnitzel. Oh the schnitzel… this is now one of my daughter’s favorite foods!.

Located next to the Dom cathedral, the entrance puts you in the middle of a throng of servers and flowing barrel. Take a seat (inside or out) or cozy up to a ledge and enjoy a few glasses of their super light, fruity kölsch.

Früh am Dom (a beer house) is split over three levels and is a very popular place for a Kölsch (beer). You’ll find both locals and tourists in here. The beer is good and it’s not that expensive.

I also ate at Brauhaus früh am Dom, which serves authentic German food. I opted for beer and sauerbraten, and it was very tasty. Both restaurants were within walking distance of the cathedral.

Nach ein paar Kölsch kann man sich als ortsunkundiger schnell mal verlaufen. Dafür gibt es viele Wegweiser. Perfekter Ort für Ausflügler oder Leute, die grad vom Shopping kommen.

This meandering labyrinth of a Brauhaus is just a short walk from Cologne Cathedral and is celebrated its 113th year in the city in 2017.

I found myself at Früh am Dom for a late night snack and maybe a few more Stangen of Kölsch before turning myself in for the night.
