Max Stark

When looking for restaurants in Cologne, places out of the way such as Schreckenskammer and Max Stark (north of the train station, the former being within crawling distance of the Station Backpackers Hostel), Päffgen (Friesenstrasse) and both of Cologne’s independent brewpubs (Hellers Brauhaus on Roonstrasse and Braustelle in Ehrenfeld) offer cheaper and better food than the old town tourist traps. Besides, most of these places have tons of atmosphere, which doesn’t hurt!

Der kleine Laden im Kunibertsviertel ist zwar immer gerappelt voll und sehr laut, dabei vermittelt er aber immer ein ganz besonders nahbares und herzliches Gefühl – echtes Brauhausfeeling eben!. Die Köbesse sind gewohnt ruppig, dabei aber sehr freundlich (kölsch eben) und das Essen natürlich bodenständig und sehr lecker. Die Portionen sind mehr als großzügig, ihr werdet also definitiv satt.

Die Gaststätte Max Stark, gelegen in der Nähe des Eigelsteinviertels, ist ein gemütliches kölsches Brauhaus im Vintagestil. Bekannt ist das Max Stark für sein uriges Ambiente und seinen freundlichen Service. Hier wird Päffgen Kölsch frisch vom Fass ausgeschenkt, begleitet von einer vielfältigen Speisekarte mit rheinischen Spezialitäten wie Himmel un Ääd und Kölschem Kaviar.

The history of this Cologne brewery pub stretches back to 1889 when a gentleman named – wait for it – Max Stark turned his hand to the art of beer-brewing. After many years of thriving business, the building was damaged during the war and forced to close. It wasn’t until 1953 that it received a makeshift roof along with a new owner and a new name.

Wie beliebt das Max Stark ist, wissen alle, die schon mal versucht haben, in dem urigen Gasthaus im Kunibertsviertel (direkt neben dem Eigelstein-Viertel) einen Tisch zu bekommen. Will heißen: Wer nicht reserviert hat, braucht Glück und Geduld. Gäste bekommen hier süffiges Päffgen-Kölsch und Brauhaus-Kost vom Feinsten serviert.

Upon entering the restaurant, you will instantly feel the charming European vibe expected off Parisian streets.

Max Stark – I brought our family here because of their great reviews, only to see it was full and we needed a reservation (womp womp…). BUT they offered us take-away as an option so we took it!. You will need to pay for to-go boxes at the restaurant or go across the street and buy them.

Opening Hours: 11am-12amPrice: $$$My Rating: ★★★★Menu & Location. Max Stark is, at least from my experience, more of a proper restaurant than a pub or beer garden. This is the kind of place I’d go for a German dinner if I was out with my parents, for example.

Local celebrities, regulars and drinking societies are equally represented in the “Starkse Max”. This traditional restaurant dates back to 1889, is perhaps the biggest attraction in the Kunibert quarter. The brewery gets along without music and carnival.

They serve beer, they have quick service and they have German food that changes seasonally. For example, sauerbraten – braised horse or beef in a sweet and sour sauce with raisins. This is very classic.
