What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ox & Klee is celebrated for its exceptional, creative tasting menus that offer a multi-sensory culinary journey, with many praising the inventive dishes and the impeccable quality of the food. However, some diners have noted issues with service speed and explanation, with experiences ranging from slow and approximate to feeling rushed. The restaurant's unique approach, including non-alcoholic pairings and a relaxed atmosphere, is a draw, but the extended dining times and cost can be a point of contention for some.
"Amazing experience. We had a 6-course dinner, and everything was orchestrated perfectly. The dishes are something out of the ordinary, flavors we have never had in our lives and prepared with mastery. The service is impeccable and what we really like about this restaurant is the more relaxed atmosphere, without anything too fancy or that you don't feel comfortable in, you can really go dressed however you want and feel at home. The wine list is incredible, and they have an orange wine from Georgia that is simply perfect."

"Ox & Klee in Cologne’s iconic Rheinauhafen is a standout. Under chef Daniel Gottschlich’s inspired vision, this two‑Michelin‑starred restaurant masterfully invites diners on a multisensory journey. Its “Experience Taste” menus—Ox (fish/meat) and Klee (vegetarian)—delight across six, eight, or twelve courses, each dish cleverly balancing sweet, sour, salty, bitter, fatty, and umami.
Housed in the modern Crane House No. 1 overlooking the Rhine, the space is tastefully pared‑back industrial chic—warm wood, clean lines, and relaxed, conversational service . As Michelin notes, the ambiance reflects “lively chatter and lots of laughter,” blending top‑tier gastronomy with Cologne’s easy‑going spirit .
Highlights include a mackerel riff on Caesar salad—yellowtail, caviar, calamansi gel, anchovy bread crisps, Reypenaer cheese—and playful nods to local tradition like Halve Hahn . Every bite exhibits thoughtful ingredient pairing and impeccable technique. The optional wine or non‑alcoholic pairings are equally imaginative.
Whether opting for meat or vegetarian, the entire dining experience feels artful yet unforgettable. A meal at Ox & Klee transcends a sumptuous feast—it’s a cultural, sensory, and culinary celebration. For anyone visiting Cologne, it’s not just a recommendation — it’s essential."

"5 Hours of Excellence – The Art of Taste
A beautifully designed concept where guests not only enjoy the food, but also learn how the chef balances flavors through carefully chosen ingredients and innovative techniques. Each dish is a true masterpiece. Service is impeccable, and the chef visiting the table to share the story behind the dish proves that 2-Michelin-star dining doesn’t need to feel pretentious.
A highlight is the tribute to the city: the “Halve Hahn” course, leaving you with the taste of a Kölsch Brauhaus presented in a way you’ve never experienced before. The vegetarian menu is equally outstanding, and even those driving can enjoy a non-alcoholic pairing that complements each dish like an integral ingredient — perfectly in line with the philosophy of the Art of Taste.
Add to that a beautiful setting, and this was the easiest 5 stars I’ve ever given."

Where beer house traditions meet modern cuisine
But at his restaurant Ox & Klee in the middle of the three impressive Kranhaus buildings by the Rhine River, the pioneering Daniel Gottschlich is showing that non-alcoholic drinks can also be a sensory culinary experience. To complement Ox & Klee’s nine-course dinner, diners don’t just get a wine pairing, but also have the option of being served non-alcoholic drinks with every course, which either come from the kitchen, are the responsibility of the sommelier, or mixed in the bar one floor below. Tonic with buckwheat caramel and pepper, red grape juice with olive oil and eucalyptus or beetroot with bay leaf might sound unusual at first, but once you’ve tried them, you’ll soon be arguing about who gets to be the designated driver of the evening, happily forgoing wine in favour of more creative refreshments.

Playing with the concepts of haute cuisine, Ox und Klee is a modern restaurant that reinvents art at the level of the gourmet. On the table stand colorful plates arranged with careful regard for the flavor’s entanglements, such as Dutch mackerel in foamy sauce lined with white asparagus with buttons of avocado, pinches of grapefruit and seasoned with malts and Iberia pork with eggplant and lemon salt.
