Big yet surprisingly cosy and intimate, Peters Brauhaus serves a bewildering choice of Cologne delicacies to anchor down the eponymous Kölsch. The brewhouse was first mentioned in the tax books of the city of Cologne in 1544, making it the oldest and most celebrated brewery. Located on the north side of the Alter Market, beer fans can opt to sit in the sun on a wee slice of the cobbled plaza or march inside to enjoy a proper beer hall experience whilst plopping down at communal feasting table for a few swigs.

With our lunch and a couple of Kölsch to get us going, we left for the nearby Peters Brauhaus, which opened at 11:30 AM, passing by Brauhaus Sion which didn’t open until noon. We had a few minutes to kill before Peters Brauhaus opened, so we walked around a little along the Mühlengasse to scout out the area and see if there were other places we might want to stop. We did make note of the Dom im Stapelhaus at the end of Mühlengasse next to the Rhine River.

I managed to try both at the perennially popular Peter’s Brauhaus in Cologne’s old town, another pub-cum-restaurant very much in the old, wood-panelled, tavern-style. That isn’t to say that everything on the menu is a far cry from the usual German fare; there is still the typical selection of bratwurst, schnitzel and pork knuckle (although here is it called Hämmche, pickled and brined and served with fried potatoes and a dab of hot mustard.)

Peters Brauhaus is one of those memorable, cosy places that you could go back to again and again. Originally named Zum Kranz (the wreath), this Mühlengasse brewery was established in 1544 and passed through many hands over the centuries, as well as being destroyed in World War II. Peters Brauhaus took the reins in 1994 and restored it to its former glory with its striking stained glass ceiling, oak panelling and majestic wreaths throughout.

Peters Brauhaus is the perfect spot and dining pick for international visitors traveling on a budget. At Peter’s place, guests are offered a myriad of both traditional and European meals which won’t cost them a fortune when receiving the bill. Peters Brauhhas is also known for its lovely atmosphere and good service, with some of the must-try meals on the menu being the typical wiener schnitzel, black pudding, as well as schweinshaxe.

One of the best meals we had in Cologne was at Peters Brauhaus, which is super popular and always buzzing with people—it’s kind of a go-to spot for classic German food and beer. There are actually two locations ~ we went to the one near Rudolfplatz around 4pm (before the dinner rush!), which had a fantastic local feel and delicious food. You just can’t go to Germany without getting wienerschnitzel fyi ;0.

A word of warning though, Peter’s Brauhaus gets crowded at the weekends so if you’re looking to try some of their excellent traditional food or sup a Kölsch in less hectic surroundings, your best bet is to visit during the afternoon or on a weekday.

That helps when you can’t open bottles the German way – a.k.a. with absolutely anything available like lighters, sticks, edges, teeth, another bottle, very rarely bottle openers, etc.

If you’re on a tight budget but still want a delicious lunch, try the nearby My Curry Wurst counter around the corner on Unter Käster.

Himmel Un Ääd is the ultimate comfort food for many of us living in the Rheinland Pfalz region. The combination of mashed potatoes and apple sauce represents "earth" and "heaven" and every spoonful will warm up your soul. There's usually a side of blutwurst (blood sausage) to give it a savory punch.

Take a look at the impressive stained glass ceiling in the main room, and choose whether you want a drink there or in the taproom, a slightly under-used corner of the pub, but serves well if you want to drop-in and go.

Peters Brauhaus is another personal favorite spot to drink Kölsch in Cologne. This one is located smack in the center of Köln’s old town and super easy to find, mostly because it’s HUGE. Despite its size, Peters feels cozy and it’s always packed with both tourists and locals alike.

Throughout the old city, or Altstadt in German, there is an assortment of German restaurants and Kölsch breweries. Some are better than others, especially when it comes to the food. Peters Brauhaus is my favorite spot, because they have good Kölsch and even better food!

on a previous trip to Cologne, but looking back it must have been Brauhaus Sion instead. The latter is just short walk away, so it’s easy to see how the confusion may have arisen. Both outlets are fine examples of a traditional, Cologne beer-house.

Peters Brauhaus is one of the more famous “must go” to for traditional Kölsch, and equally for some satisfying local grub. The same can be said for many of the other traditional brewhouses. But we came to Peters for one thing, pork knuckle!.

After Früh am Dom, walk round the corner to Peters Brauhaus to try a Peters Kölsch under their stunning stained glass ceiling. Part of the fun of visiting Cologne is seeing how many of the different Kölsch you can try while you’re there!

The first brewery at 1 Mühlengasse opened back in the 16th century. The building, known as Brügelmannhaus, saw a lot over the years before becoming Peters Brauhaus in 1994. Peters‘ slogan consists of three simple words: Freundlich.

We made a quick stop at a traditional brewpub - Peters Brauhaus (pictured above) - to have a look around. It was much too early in the morning for a beer, but fun to see the inside of this historic brewpub.

Päffgen Brauhaus Authenticity on tap is guaranteed in this brilliant brauhaus, it’s the only one in Cologne with a brewery on the premises and the beer garden is a city favourite for summer afternoons.

Peters is still off the dom some but in a different direction. It's more of a beer hall for sure. Very pretty and was still relatively relaxed with families eating dinner and enjoying their drinks.

Located in a quieter residential neighborhood the Reissdorf Brauhaus has more of a pub feel with a proper bar and soccer matches on the TV. Their kölsch is super crisp and easy to find in the US.

Peters Brauhaus – Featuring painted glass ceilings and mahogany furnishings, this brewery offers typical German dishes such as sauerkraut with sausages, pork chops and “Flammkuchen”.

You can find liver wurst in most brauhäusers, but Peters Brauhaus at Mühlengasse 1, is so cozy and the service so attentive, you might want to stay for more than a snack.

Peter’s Brauhaus is said to be the smallest beerhouse in Cologne, seating 200 people. It’s a former cotton spinning factory and a pretty central spot if you want a beer.

We love Peter’s Brauhaus because of the atmosphere, the varied local menu but mainly because we believe it’s the best kolsch available in the city surrounds!

Fruh am Dom (frueh-am-dom.de) has some lovely old features and the most attentive waiters, while Peters (peters-brauhaus.de) has the best party atmosphere.

So, we limited our sample to four of Cologne’s most notable dining establishments: Bei Oma Kleinmann, Schreckenskammer, Lederer, and Peters Brauhaus.
