Reviews Summary

Peters Brauhaus offers a traditional German dining experience with hearty portions and a historic ambiance, highlighted by its stunning stained-glass ceiling. While many praise the authentic flavors of dishes like pork knuckle and apple strudel, and the refreshing Kölsch beer, some diners report inconsistent or unfriendly service, particularly towards tourists. It's recommended to make reservations, especially during peak hours, to ensure a smoother experience.

"So tasty! The sausages were perfectly seasoned and juicy, and the fresh salad balanced the flavors beautifully. Simple, delicious, and worth every bite!"

G “AG” Av

"Ordered chef’s special and pork schnitzel under their specialities!

Food was decent, personally I love the chef’s special. It was pretty crowded on a Tuesday night and it took awhile to get seated, have orders taken and eventually food served!

Looks to be understaffed but, thankfully the service was good here! (unlike the other reviews that mentioned rude or racist)

Recommended but try to get there before you are hungry else the wait might ruin the whole experience."

Kerwin Choo

"Wonderful restaurant. The waiters are older gentlemen who are kind and good with the speed of service. The food was very good and delicious. The pork knuckle with fried bacon potatoes was exquisite, a must try. It was much bigger than I expected but worth the money and fantastic. Mind that after 5:30PM, it gets crowded with long queues outside, as this is a super popular place. Atmosphere is mid but the tasty food and staff make up for it.
Enjoy."

Things To See and Do in Cologne

Big yet surprisingly cosy and intimate, Peters Brauhaus serves a bewildering choice of Cologne delicacies to anchor down the eponymous Kölsch. The brewhouse was first mentioned in the tax books of the city of Cologne in 1544, making it the oldest and most celebrated brewery. Located on the north side of the Alter Market, beer fans can opt to sit in the sun on a wee slice of the cobbled plaza or march inside to enjoy a proper beer hall experience whilst plopping down at communal feasting table for a few swigs.

2023 German Beer Trip – Day 1: Kölsch in Köln

With our lunch and a couple of Kölsch to get us going, we left for the nearby Peters Brauhaus, which opened at 11:30 AM, passing by Brauhaus Sion which didn’t open until noon. We had a few minutes to kill before Peters Brauhaus opened, so we walked around a little along the Mühlengasse to scout out the area and see if there were other places we might want to stop. We did make note of the Dom im Stapelhaus at the end of Mühlengasse next to the Rhine River.

Culinary Cologne: Adventures in German Cuisine

I managed to try both at the perennially popular Peter’s Brauhaus in Cologne’s old town, another pub-cum-restaurant very much in the old, wood-panelled, tavern-style. That isn’t to say that everything on the menu is a far cry from the usual German fare; there is still the typical selection of bratwurst, schnitzel and pork knuckle (although here is it called Hämmche, pickled and brined and served with fried potatoes and a dab of hot mustard.)

The Best Places to Eat Out in Cologne

Peters Brauhaus is one of those memorable, cosy places that you could go back to again and again. Originally named Zum Kranz (the wreath), this Mühlengasse brewery was established in 1544 and passed through many hands over the centuries, as well as being destroyed in World War II. Peters Brauhaus took the reins in 1994 and restored it to its former glory with its striking stained glass ceiling, oak panelling and majestic wreaths throughout.
