Breweries are typical places for Germans to meet and chat after a hard day at work, but characterful Uerige is not only a local meeting place, it is also home to some of the best regional German beer in the country. With a friendly and cozy atmosphere spread across six major rooms, patrons have plenty of space to celebrate German cuisine, beer or just being in Düsseldorf. On the menu, distinctive types of sausages, soups, tartar, and red beet carpaccio with goats’ cheese rub shoulders, while for dessert try the super-light and creamy panna cotta.

Some people call Düsseldorf’s Altstadt the “longest bar in the world,” thanks to the hundreds of bars, restaurants and beer houses that line the street. Some people also say that Zum Uerige is home to the world’s best Altbier. In fact, the world champion beer sommelier has proclaimed Zum Uerige’s Altbier to be the best German regional beer, which is no small feat.

When it comes to food we’d recommend a hearty German meal (did someone say schnitzel?) at one of the many breweries and traditional restaurants in the Old Town, of which Uerige and Füchschen Alt are big favourites. Düsseldorf also has a large Japanese community which has culminated into a vibrant Japanese quarter along Immermannstraße and Klosterstraße, fondly known as Little Tokyo. Besides bakeries, bars, hotels, supermarkets and bookshops, this lively quarter is filled with restaurants serving all forms of Japanese cuisine.

If this gives you an appetite for further liquid refreshment, you might want to taste traditional Düsseldorfer Alt in Uerige (always an occasion) or alternatively, visit the smallest ‘pub’ in the city and hop across the street to the Killepitschstube. Here you can sample a small glass of the heart-warming herbal liquor reputed to contain a mixture of over 90 fruits, herbs and spices. Uerige is the first place I stepped foot in when I came to Düsseldorf the first time. They told me that this is the right place to get familiar with the city, so I could not miss it.And today, I still consider Uerige the place I need to bring our guests if it is their first time in Düsseldorf.Uerige is a craft brewery where you can drink the famous beer of Düsseldorf, called “Altbier” (Old Beer in English). It is located in the heart of the Altstadt, therefore you cannot miss it.

In Düsseldorf, four of the five remaining classic altbier breweries have annual special releases that they have been celebrating for a long time: Füchschen, Schlüssel, Schumacher, and Uerige. These special beers are all bigger versions (5.5–6% ABV) of the delicious altbier that they brew and serve every day. The story goes that historically beers like this were created by brewers brewing a special batch and secretly sharing it with those in the know.

With a large brewery on-site offering tours to the public, Uerige Dusseldorf is another one of the oldest breweries in the city, first mentioned back in the early 1600s. Priding itself on maintaining the ‘altbier’ style of brewing beer using wooden cask barrels and gravity pouring, this is the place to be if you’re looking for proper fresh beer!. With a traditional laid-back atmosphere inside, there’s never a bad time to pay a visit to Uerige.

Perhaps the best known, and certainly one of the most popular Düsseldorf house-breweries, Zum Uerige is located in a large Altstadt building not far from the Rhine, and a short walk from the Rathaus. The brewery’s name comes from its original owner, Wilhelm Cuerten, who in 1862 started serving beer at what had then been a wine bar. He had a reputation for being surly and patrons would often say that they would meet “at the grouch’s place”.

There are six microbreweries in the city: Brauerei Kürzer, Hausbrauerei zum Schlüssel, Brauerei im Füchschen, Uerige Obergärige Hausbrauerei, Brauerei Schumacher and Hausbrauerei Alter Bahnhof. Five of the six brewhouses are headquartered in the Old Town, where they attract hungry patrons in the daytime and revellers at night. The brewhouses are where you’ll find the freshest and best beer, and many also serve rustic regional cuisine.

No trip to Dusseldorf is complete without a visit to the city’s famed Uerige Brewery. Beer enthusiasts should book themselves a tour here which offers a detailed review of the brewing, cooling, maturing and bottling process. After the tour guests are served crispy fried knuckles of pork with coleslaw and Treberbrötchen, a roll made of spent grains as well as ice cold glasses of fresh Uerige Alt, the breweries signature move.

Visit a couple Altbier breweries throughout the old town like Uerige and Brauerei Schumacher for the real Düsseldorf experience (Altbier translates into ‘old beer’ and is a style of beer brewed only in and around the city of Düsseldorf). If you’re still hungry, this will also be a great place to grab a few local snacks like Mettwurst (raw minced pork on a bun) or Soleier (a pickled egg with vinegar, mustard, and oil).

One of the most popular breweries in the Altstadt, Uerige provides a large outside seating area and numerous indoor rooms and a bar area. The location is near the promenade, or river front walking area and has an old-world charm like most other breweries in this district. The decor has a bit more brass and polished look than some of the older breweries nearby and the staff is pleasant and quick to serve you.

At the top of Berger Straße, right next to the Rhine, you will find Uerige, a real institution that is known far beyond Düsseldorf for its Altbier. And the Uerige is much more than just a brewery: it is a central meeting place for beer lovers from all over the world. But also for Düsseldorfers who meet before and after Fortuna matches, after their weekend shopping on Carlsplatz and for a beer in between.

A night out in the Altstadt means a visit to one of its many brauereigaststätten, venerable beer halls which brew their own beer and serve weighty portions of food. The largest and most famous is Zum Uerige with its arched ceilings, wooden benches and stain-glassed windows. Be warned: the waiters here have a reputation for not letting you leave until you've drunk your fill of Altbier, the local tipple.

There are four microbreweries within the pretty small old town - from very traditional Schlüssel, Uerige and Füchschen to modern Kürzer. The former headquarter of Schumacher brewery is also in the old town but is not counted as old town brewery as they brew their beer since the Second World War in the city center outside of the old town. You will be able to taste all of their brews if you like.

The brewery takes up the whole block, and you'll recognize it by the lines of wooden tables packed with young people after work drinking "bierchen" or small 0,25L beers. As it was still pretty cold on our trip, I preferred the bar that we ducked into at the end of the row. We stopped in because they advertised craft brew, not realizing it was all part of the same Uerige complex.

For those visiting Dusseldorf for the first time, a good place to start is Uerige, perfectly positioned for people-watching near the riverside promenade in the old town and boasting one of the Altstadt's larger outdoor seating/standing areas. From there, a handful of other places are all within walking distance, including local favorites Schumacher, Fuchschen, and Schlüsse.

Start with the historic Uerige Hausbrauerei, famous for its Altbier, and then move on to other traditional brewpubs like Füchschen and Schlüssel. Each offers a unique ambiance and beer experience. Don’t forget to pair your beer with some traditional Rhineland dishes, like “Himmel und Äd” (potatoes with black pudding and apples), for the full culinary experience.

For Germans outside of Düsseldorf, Uerige is typically regarded as the best major brand. The residents of the city have differing opinions and I have arguments that Füchschen or even Frankenheimer is the superior beer. In more recent times there are more creative craft-breweries working with the traditional recipes, some of these are also quite good.

One of the old, uber-traditional Dusseldorf beers, Uerige’s altbier is extremely distinctive. It’s the most bitter of all the alt varieties produced in Dusseldorf giving it a really individual flavour. Like the original owner whose nickname “Uerige” or “grouch” it bears, it’s a divisive, love it or hate it brew.

Uerige is in the center of the Altstadt located just a walk away from the Rhein River. It is a craft brewery made here in Düsseldorf and they offer public tours for those interested. The beer is delicious (I think) and made of caramel malt, roasted malt, barley, hops, water, and their special Uerige yeast.

In terms of German beer halls in Dusseldorf, it is widely accepted that Uerige Hausbrauerei (Kruising Marktstrasse, 40213 Dusseldorf, Germany) is the place to be. Situated in the old town (more on that shortly), soak up some traditional German culture and knock back a few steins among like-minded visitors.

Visit Uerige and try their Altbier — a top-fermented beer famous throughout Dusseldorf. Uerige is also one of the oldest breweries in the city and you can even do a brewery tour if you book ahead of time. Overall Uerige is a great place to experience the German drinking culture and meet expats and locals.

If you’re looking for a true Altbier experience, Uerige is a must-visit. This is one of the most well-known spots in town, in no small part thanks to its prime location on a massive corner in the heart of Old Town. Uerige is also the largest Altbier brewery in Düsseldorf, with roots dating back to 1862.

Soleier are hard-boiled, pickled eggs which in Düsseldorf, are commonly served with a spicy ABB mustard, vinegar, oil, salt, and pepper. But there’s a catch!. Preparing Soleier is all part of the fun and takes quite an artistic hand and it can only be done at the famous Uerige!

Twice a year - the third Tuesday in January and October - a stronger beer, called "Sticke" (it's a dialect word meaning "secret", related to the Dutch word "stiekem"), is tapped in Uerige. It's a lot heavier and sweeter than the standard alt. Personally, I prefer the latter.

Where to eat Soleier: I tried mine at the Uerige, which I was told is Düsseldorf’s oldest microbrewery, likely founded at some point in the 1600s. Here, you’ll find very traditional decor, a lively, friendly atmosphere, and happy beer drinkers spilling out onto the street.

It’s time for another alt, this time from Uerige, whose idiosyncratic brewhouse can be found on Berger Strasse, right in the heart of the Old Town. I sit in the corridor and, eventually, a Köbes brings me a glass. It’s one of the most remarkable beers I’ve ever had.

The unique local altbier, served in quarter-litre glasses, is brewed in eight different bars, from the wood-panelled Uerige to the beam-roofed Fuchschen. If you have time for just one, head to the tiny Zum Schlussel which, arguably, serves the best beer of the lot.

The Uerige Obergärige brewery is a great place to meet other travelers. It's a traditional brewery with a lively atmosphere and a good selection of beers. Another popular spot is the 'Die Schanze' district, which is known for its alternative bars and restaurants.

**Without any argument, this place is a must on an Altstadt tour. Uerige beer has been brewed since 1862 and since then there has been no let up in visits from thirsty guests. At any time of year, inside or outside, you can enjoy life and top-fermented beer here.

Tourists who prefer to find restaurants in Düsseldorf by reviews, it is better to look into Zum Uerige. It is a place with good food, where the main thing is to say "stop" in time. The secret is that the waiters will constantly refill your empty glass of beer.

Uerige has been brewing beer in Dusseldorf’s Old Town since 1862. The brewery has several public rooms that vary in size and atmosphere. The Brauhaus can accommodate 150 people and has shiny copper vats and occasional live music.

Among many others you will find Uerige – a quaint souvenir and gift shop – the Dusseldorfer Senfladen – one of Dusseldorf’s most famous mustard shops – and Gewurzhaus – a “legendary” spice and specialty food shop.

Uerige: Think of a place that will be packed almost every day no matter what time you go. On weekends, forget about it. Uerige is one of the most traditional breweries in the city, which also produces the Altbier.

You can’t miss Uerige Obergärige Hausbrauerei as its right in the middle of Altstadt. Lots of rooms to find or sit outside on the beer terrace which appears to never end. Try the pickled eggs with your beer.

Besides Altbier, they also have fresh Weizenbier (wheat beer) on tap. On Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the brewery offers a delicious limited menu. Try their famous pea soup or goulash.

The Kürzer brewery is young and hip, the Uerige is a cult brewery where tradition is alive and well. Our tip for late hours: Go for a salmiaki schnapps in the scraggly Kreuzherrenecke.
