Located very close to the shores of Neckar river, this bar offers friendly service, great snacks and food (try the mixed salads, the sausages and the schnitzels) and an endless variety of beers.

It's worth elbowing your way into this bar for the brewed-on-the-premises beer. Try the Dunkles Hefeweizen, or dark wheat beer, which is not produced as widely as the lighter version. As with most German brewpubs, there's a full menu, too, including a long list of wurst dishes.

A little further along the Steingasse towards the old town takes you to Vetter’s Alt, another keenly frequented local beer, and meat den, with classic Teutonic décor. Good for lunch, great for dinner, the charming Brauhaus atmosphere ties the dining experience together and there is no debate that it counts as one of the best restaurants in Heidelberg. As for the menu, you’ll relish in the range of delicious locally brewed ales and lagers, servable in requisite 1-Liter Maßkrüge if desired; as well as a staple array of authentic Bavarian fare, including favorites pork knuckle (Schweinhaxe) and Nürnberger Rostbratwürste.

Before we wrap up the evening at the rustic Brauhaus Vetter, we’re heading for one of Germany’s most visited attractions. The romantic Heidelberg Castle sits perched up high above the Old Town. On sunny days, the Scheffelterrasse, opposite the castle grounds, is the perfect spot from which to watch the sky immersing the town in the most beautiful red tones.

Meat lovers - of which I am not one, but I'm told there are some - will find the rustic atmosphere, the home-style meat mountains and the home-brewed beer at Brauhaus Vetter quite good. There is something similar only a few hundred metres away at the Kulturbrauerei, both in the old town.

Taking the funicular down to the old town, I meet friends at Vetter’s Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus on Steingasse, Europe’s longest carless street. It’s one of those baronial style Germanic places with high ceilings, large wood beams, long tables and a lot of dark highly polished wood.

Vetters was the original brewery in Heidelberg, started by Klaus Peter Better in 1987. It was born out of his private passion and has turned into a family affair. The motto is ‘Every guest is welcome’ and they feature handcrafted beers served with traditional German cuisine.

If you want to have a drink or a snack, you can go to Vetter’s Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus, a brewery that produces its own beer and serves pretzels and other snacks. You can also go to Destille, a pub that has a large selection of beers, wines and spirits.

Vetters Brauhaus is clearly one of the local’s favorite given how busy it always is. Its draft beers are delicious and the atmosphere is very casual. It is a perfect place to meet with friends and have a couple of beers.

Vetter’s is an old brewery, located right near the old bridge. We recommend getting beer from here before leaving Heidelberg. You can also purchase beer here and bring it with you to enjoy on the Neckarwiese.

It had very authentic German food and is also well known for its beer selection. A good option for lunch or dinner. Ronnie had wurst and a pretzel while I had spaetzle (cheesy pasta)

Being a lover of different beers, we stopped at Vetters Brauhaus for a drink and a bite to eat. I had to try a Heidelberg Beer. The brewery is about 100 meters from the bridge-gate.

It’s a dark, candlelit restaurant where you sit tightly packed and order beers and brewer’s pan. It’s made with blood and liver sausage with fried potatoes.

The city hosts the original Vetter’s Brauhaus inn, which has exported its culture of freshly brewed drinks, sausage and over-fresh pretzels worldwide.
