Little more than a hole in the wall, this former cooper's workshop has been transformed into a candlelit pub. No matter when you go, it seems to be filled with people seated around the wooden tables (so dinner reservations are usually a necessity). The menu features regional specialties from Baden and the Pfalz, such as schäufele (pickled and slightly smoked pork shoulder); leberknödel (liver dumplings); and slices of saumagen (a spicy meat-and-potato mixture encased in a sow's stomach).

Our other restaurant experience that’s worth mentioned was “Schnitzelbank.” It’s a hole in the wall place off of a side street and if you’re in Heidelberg, you need to go there. It’s family style seating, which means there are a bunch of long tables and you share them with whoever is around. It amazed us how many people didn’t know this when they walked in and it was fun to watch them squirm with the discomforting idea of sitting next to someone they don’t know.

My absolute best recommendation for brunch is the weekly Sunday brunch at the Weinstube in the Heidelberg Castle. That’s right, you can have brunch overlooking the inner castle courtyard in a lovely dining room built right into one of the castle buildings. It’s a three-hour affair with a full appetizer buffet, a main meal you collect in the kitchen and have a little chat with the chefs, and then a fancy dessert buffet.

No visit to Heidelberg—or Germany, for that matter—would be complete without trying Schnitzel. This breaded and fried cutlet, often made from pork or veal, is one of the most popular dishes across the country. The Schnitzelbank has its own unique atmosphere with its wooden workbenches from the time when this was still a cooperage!. And yes, you guessed it right, the benches in the interior gave the place its name.

We took our friend to Schnitzelbank where they serve… you guessed it Schnitzel. They serve many kinds but my favorite is the authentic wienerschnitzel. This is a tiny restaurant off the Hauptstraße, on Bauamtsgasse, with only a few tables.

In diesem urigen Lokal mit Holzoptik, bekommt ihr leckere deutsche Hausmannskost zu angemessenen Preisen. Dazu könnt ihr euch durch die lange Weinkarte probieren. Die freundliche Bedienung erfüllt jeden Wunsch und das in kürzester Zeit.

We also heard good things about Hackteufel (Steingasse 7) and Schnitzelbank (Bauamtsgasse 7). Try Zum Güldenen Schaf or The Golden Sheep (Hauptstrasse 115). All have a convivial atmosphere and traditional German dishes on the menu.

Personally I believe Weinstube Schnitzelbank is the most wanted eating spot in Heidelberg. You have to call some days in advance to book a table. But in exchange you get good atmosphere, amazing food and decent prices.
