What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Weinstube Schnitzelbank is celebrated for its authentic and generously portioned German cuisine, particularly its schnitzels. Diners rave about the unique, rustic ambiance of the former cooper's workshop and the friendly service. However, some reviews note that the kitchen can be inconsistent, with one diner experiencing issues with the preparation of a traditional dish.
"Unbelievable food and service- indoor seating is shared tables and beautifully rustic. Outdoor sidewalk seating as well. The schnitzel is obviously the go to here. I went with schnitzel stuffed with blue cheese/ ham and it was ridiculously good. My wife got hers with mushroom gravy and my son got his garlic schnitzel. Both loved them!
Service was awesome and the only reason atmosphere is 4 stars is it is hot inside- but no/frills perfect!"
Tony Rudy
"As the name goes, the seating in this restaurant is bench so you can share a table with anyone, even strangers.
The Schnitzel is super but the portion is too large for me so I took away the rest.
I love the rustic decor and the cold Weißbier just made it even better."
Yesi Riana
"Such good food it’s genuinely incredible. We got the wienerschnitzel and the garlic one, along with garlic bread and apple strudel. I would get all of these every day. The service is also so lovely and kind, very fresh and fast. They speak English as well! Cute spot too, but be prepared to wait."

Little more than a hole in the wall, this former cooper's workshop has been transformed into a candlelit pub. No matter when you go, it seems to be filled with people seated around the wooden tables (so dinner reservations are usually a necessity). The menu features regional specialties from Baden and the Pfalz, such as schäufele (pickled and slightly smoked pork shoulder); leberknödel (liver dumplings); and slices of saumagen (a spicy meat-and-potato mixture encased in a sow's stomach).

Our Guide: Heidelberg, Germany
Our other restaurant experience that’s worth mentioned was “Schnitzelbank.” It’s a hole in the wall place off of a side street and if you’re in Heidelberg, you need to go there. It’s family style seating, which means there are a bunch of long tables and you share them with whoever is around. It amazed us how many people didn’t know this when they walked in and it was fun to watch them squirm with the discomforting idea of sitting next to someone they don’t know.

Bring your appetite to enjoy the large, delectable portions of Schnitzelbank, a classic and cosy German wine tavern jam-packed with patrons every time you visit it. Offering great German food and beer until 11pm, the small but amazing restaurant features a spectrum of regional wines and local tipples and German delights including pork schnitzel and veal.
Best Restaurants in Heidelberg
My absolute best recommendation for brunch is the weekly Sunday brunch at the Weinstube in the Heidelberg Castle. That’s right, you can have brunch overlooking the inner castle courtyard in a lovely dining room built right into one of the castle buildings. It’s a three-hour affair with a full appetizer buffet, a main meal you collect in the kitchen and have a little chat with the chefs, and then a fancy dessert buffet.

No visit to Heidelberg—or Germany, for that matter—would be complete without trying Schnitzel. This breaded and fried cutlet, often made from pork or veal, is one of the most popular dishes across the country. In Heidelberg, you’ll find a variety of Schnitzel options, from the classic Wiener Schnitzel served with lemon wedges to more creative versions like Jägerschnitzel, topped with a rich mushroom sauce.
