"Went for dinner with a few colleagues and it has been rather disappointing. The appetizers were very good, carpaccio, vittelo tonnato, the sardines and burrata were all very good.
The main courses though were just ok. The linguini with calamari were just ok, almost inedible pasta and just close to al dente, rather tasteless.
I deduct 2 stars for the absolutely horrible service: menus were brought out, we had to wave our waiter down after a while to even come back to take our order. After we asked for the wine menu, he took about 30 min to ask what we liked. And so it went. Other tables for bread and grossing, nothing for us. New guests came and got served before us while we waited.
1 hour after we ordered we got out appetizers. 1h 15min after that we finally got our mains. I went to ask after 1h and was told they started cooking food for the table next to us (who arrived later) where the owner was constantly spending time. I guess knowing the owner helps get any service here. We were new and no one cared.
So, after almost 3hour we finished appetizers and mains....unacceptable.
They did send a bottle of wine to apologize, but the way this was handled was bad and not particularly customer oriented.
I definitely won't be back. If you're a regular and the owner knows you, I am sure it's great. Else, don't bother."

"Loved our meal at this place when we came to Kassel for documenta. Clearly popular, we were lucky to get a late table one night without reservations, after returning three times over the course of the evening to check in. Three's a charm! Great meal, wonderful wine, all offerings tasty and thoughtfully prepared and served. An owner engaged us and offered us grappa after our meal! The chef kindly showed us a beautiful marinade in process. We wanted very much to come back on our last night but it was even busier then and we didn't stand a chance. Highly recommend for a lovely meal in Kassel (but make reservations if you can)."

In fact, the entire experience felt like falling through a wormhole to a small Italian village trattoria where everyone knows your name, compounded by the owner greeting us with kisses of recognition when we entered, since we had eaten at his slightly further afield Greek restaurant Ilyssia the night before5(#footnote5)–where we had enjoyed a few complimentary glasses of ouzo with the owner (and our new friend) Elis, his wife (and Osteria’s chef) Gisela, and the other staff who joined us on the patio as we closed out the place.
