Kaffeehaus Riquet Café

The restored art nouveau house dates from 1908 has a pleasant Viennese-style coffeehouse upstairs—the best views are had from up here—and a noisier and more active café downstairs. Riquet is a company that has had dealings in the coffee trade in Africa and East Asia since 1745, as indicated by the large elephant heads adorning the facade of the building.

Cafe Riquet is a traditional coffee house with a 100 year history. Both inside and outside areas are beautiful and take you back in time. Fresh coffee is served and offered with homemade cakes and cookies, and the pieces are usually large in size.

The Kaffeehaus Riquet is a different affair entirely, less intimate, more in the Viennese tradition and an architectural gem of the Art Nouveau age. The Riquet history of trade with the Middle and Far East dates from 1745, but in 1908 when architect Paul Lange designed the company’s signature coffee house in Leipzig, he incorporated the flavors of the orient into his design of the café. The building became one of the most original buildings in the city at the time, featuring a curious mix of two pagoda towers on the roof in Chinese style, with the balustrades, cornices and gables decorated with beautifully Art Nouveau mosaics.

Riquet (riquethaus.de) has a restored art deco interior, and on a chilly day is a cosy place to sample the city’s signature sweet, Leipziger Lerche (a marzipan and jam-filled tart, similar to the Bakewell). It is said that if you haven’t been to Auerbachs Keller (auerbachskellerleipzig.de), you haven’t seen Leipzig, so head to this five-century-old cellar restaurant, made famous by a scene from Goethe’s Faust. Feast on beef roulade and gravy-smothered Saxon dumplings in the cavernous Grosse Keller, or dine in the historic wine cellar for a more refined experience.

And I’m glad we do when we wind up at the iconic copper elephant heads that adorn the front of Kafeehaus Riquet. The art nouveax building was erected in 1908 for the company Riquet & Co, who traded with East Asia and the Orient from 1745 and the architectural influences are Chinese. There are two coffee shops inside, neither can really match the grandeur of the outside, but the place has a pleasantly nostalgic feel and unsurprising for a former coffee trader, it does great coffee and cake.

Kaffeehaus Riquet Café is a building with history and tradition: you can enjoy larks, other homemade delicacies, and coffee creations with and without alcohol here in the flair of one of the best Leipzig cafes. You should definitely try the old-style chocolates with vanilla, cinnamon, and whipped cream here. The two copper elephant heads, which are still part of the heritage here, have been part of the charm of this building for over a hundred years.

Located just a few blocks from Leipzig’s main square, this cafe marks a rich history dating back to 1745 when Jean George Riquet founded the company Riquet & Co. It began as an exotic import business specializing in tea, coffee, and other commodities, later expanding to include a public coffee shop. The cafe’s legacy of serving coffee and its association with high society extended far beyond Saxony.

Riquet Café is one more outstanding gastronomic places of Leipzig. It is necessary to admit, that the building itself is the true work of art that impresses with its gorgeous and kind of odd design. The top of the house reminds of a Chinese pagoda, the front of the building is decorated with the colored mosaic ornaments, and above the entrance to the café you can observe the cast elephants’ heads.

Several times I was in Leipzig for a short stay, as well in the Kaffeehaus Riquet (Coffee house). A key advantage of this coffee house is that it is located near the train station (on the way from the station to the city center). It is a corner building (at the corner of Reichsstraße / Schuhmachergässchen) and the outside is quite striking, as it is decorated with elephant heads.
