Stop at the Café Niederegger (Breitestrasse 89; niederegger.de) across the street from the Rathaus. It is the flagship store of the famed producer of Lübeck marzipan, which, like Gouda cheese, enjoys European Union protection as a geographic indication of origin. The shop sells marzipan in a dizzying array of shapes — eels, onions, carrots, rabbits — as well as marzipan liquor and marzipan coffee.

Anyone visiting the city should head to the biggest and best known producer Niederegger (behind the Town Hall) and explore their shop, full of hand-crafted marzipan fruits and figurines, including pigs and teddy-bears, displays such as the magnificent model of the Hanseatic town and sculptures, a café (on the 1st floor) and a museum (on the 2nd floor). All of these lead you on a voyage of discovery, titillate the tastebuds and challenge all who enter not to give into such sweet temptation

The best place to visit to indulge to the fullest is Café Niederegger, located in the heart of Old Lübeck. Not only will you find the most impressive range of Niederegger products in the extensive ground floor shop – at far lower prices than you’ll find in the UK – there’s also a charming café on the first floor where you can have a light savoury lunch before indulging in one of the fabulous cakes on offer. And I can personally recommend ordering a marzipan hot chocolate, alongside!.

There are plenty of cafès in both Lübeck and Travemünde, but once you have tried Niederegger, there's not much inclination to venture elsewhere. Established in 1806, this is also the place that invented marzipan, but the succulent, scented almond confections on sale here bear no relation at all to the English version.

Today, it houses a museum which explores Lubeck’s Hanseatic history, and exhibits include collection boxes once found outside the city’s numerous guilds.

The pedestrian area of Breite Straße and the many side streets are full of shops and one of my favourite shops here is Niederegger who have their own Christmas bazaar. Lübeck is of course famous for its marzipan and Niederegger is one of the best known marzipan producers. This store is very busy during the year so expect it to be hectic at Christmas time.

To be honest, their display is a little too cold and professional for my liking. I perceived the shop to be entirely focussed on tourists and shopping. Not a pleasant shopping experience for me.
