What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Augustiner-Keller is celebrated for its historic ambiance, particularly its expansive beer garden and unique vaulted cellar. Diners rave about the delicious traditional Bavarian dishes like pork knuckle and schnitzel, often praising the speed of service and the quality of the Augustiner beer. While many highlight the friendly staff and ample portions, a few reviews mention specific dishes being disappointing or overly salty, and some note the service can feel efficient but not overly warm.
"Very nice and tasty place. The restaurant is very large, so everyone will find a piece of the table for themselves. We sat in a nice garden outside. The ordered duck, Schnitzel, and Klöße in mushroom sauce were delicious. The prices are rather higher, but the food will definitely compensate for it. I recommend."
Monika Szlek
"A super good restaurant where food and drinks are brought to you literally within 5 minutes! Huge portions and everything is insanely delicious! The two terraces are full of tables to accommodate several hundred people and there is a small parking place on the site. I liked everything very much, and our waiter was the best I have met in the last 3 years of visiting all kind of restaurants! If you are in Munich - you must visit this place!!!"

The restaurant itself feels very authentic and historic.
You really get a taste of German culture with this restaurant.
For our meals, we got sausages and the München schnitzel which both we recommend. Prices were very fair and beer was delicious."

Munich’s Augustinerkeller has been serving its mild Edelstoff beer freshly tapped from the wooden barrel since 1812. Today, the restaurant is many things at once: You can dine in the cozy and lively Bierstuebel with its old paintings and chandeliers; the beer cellar with its vaulted ceilings, brick walls, and wooden benches; the chestnut-shaded beer garden; or in the main beer hall, the bustling heart of the Augustinerkeller and a fun place for people watching. Munich Breweries Big and Small
Casual inquiry about the breweries of Munich typically results in discussion of what are referred to as the “Big Six” — Hofbrau, Paulaner, Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Spaten, and Lowenbrau. Although all of these were their own breweries in the past (Hacker-Pschorr is a consolidation of two breweries), a bit closer examination reveals that they are really brands as much as they are distinct breweries. For instance, Spaten and Lowenbrau are currently brewed at the same brewery and location as is Franziskaner, another popular Munich brand.

Augustiner Bräu invariably tops the charts when it comes to Munich’s beer tradition. Augustiner is Munich’s oldest surviving brewery, dating from the 13th century when it was created by monks who drank it while fasting, and, whether by divine aid or some ancient brewing secret, has been consistently called Munich’s best beer. At the Augustiner Keller, a variety of restaurant rooms provide a selection of cosy and grand settings for enjoying this divine brew, while the outdoor beer-garden is perfect for soaking up some sun.
Events in Munich: Tips for March 2025
During the strong beer festival the strong beer can be tasted in the Augustiner-Keller storage cellar, where beer was once stored and is drunk today. The vaults made of rough red bricks, the rustic wooden benches and, last but not least, the huge old lager barrels create a unique atmosphere. At strong beer time, the old lager cellar becomes a place of pilgrimage for all friends of the “Augustiner Maximator“, who are already eagerly awaiting the quaffable dark doppelbock from the Augustiner brewery after the winter.

August is garden month. The tomatoes are ripening and the basil is growing rampantly. Basil is also in probably our best-known drink, the Basilisk (which also partly creates the aroma here in the bar …). We mix basil with a splash of olive oil, gin, lemon, peach and ice. It creates a slightly smoothie-like, very spicy, sharp green summer drink. If you don't want alcohol, simply replace the gin with 5 cl of apple juice. It's the taste of high summer, just before the harvest.
