Munich’s Augustinerkeller has been serving its mild Edelstoff beer freshly tapped from the wooden barrel since 1812. Today, the restaurant is many things at once: You can dine in the cozy and lively Bierstuebel with its old paintings and chandeliers; the beer cellar with its vaulted ceilings, brick walls, and wooden benches; the chestnut-shaded beer garden; or in the main beer hall, the bustling heart of the Augustinerkeller and a fun place for people watching. The restaurant serves up traditional Bavarian cuisine, but you'll also find a couple of International and vegetarian dishes on the extensive menu.

Casual inquiry about the breweries of Munich typically results in discussion of what are referred to as the “Big Six” — Hofbrau, Paulaner, Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Spaten, and Lowenbrau. Although all of these were their own breweries in the past (Hacker-Pschorr is a consolidation of two breweries), a bit closer examination reveals that they are really brands as much as they are distinct breweries. For instance, Spaten and Lowenbrau are currently brewed at the same brewery and location as is Franziskaner, another popular Munich brand.

During the strong beer festival the strong beer can be tasted in the Augustiner-Keller storage cellar, where beer was once stored and is drunk today. The vaults made of rough red bricks, the rustic wooden benches and, last but not least, the huge old lager barrels create a unique atmosphere. At strong beer time, the old lager cellar becomes a place of pilgrimage for all friends of the “Augustiner Maximator“, who are already eagerly awaiting the quaffable dark doppelbock from the Augustiner brewery after the winter.

August is garden month. The tomatoes are ripening and the basil is growing rampantly. Basil is also in probably our best-known drink, the Basilisk (which also partly creates the aroma here in the bar …). We mix basil with a splash of olive oil, gin, lemon, peach and ice. It creates a slightly smoothie-like, very spicy, sharp green summer drink. If you don't want alcohol, simply replace the gin with 5 cl of apple juice. It's the taste of high summer, just before the harvest.

I went to Augustiner Keller at night….on a Monday, so I can’t say the traditional vibrant beer garden vibe was all there but I could tell just by being at this space that it’s the place to go if you want to have a good time. The party aura was strong here (whatever that means?) and the outdoor beer garden was never ending. There are multiple spots to order and a countless amount of places to sit and enjoy your giant beer.

About Oktoberfest: Steaming from hundreds of years of Fall agricultural festivals, Oktoberfest has grown to become the World’s best party attractions of 6 million visitors. The modern festivities really took off when Bavarian crown prince Ludwig I married Theresa of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 12th 1810. At the Southwestern end of the market is Uhelný Trh Square which was the Coal Market back in the day.

The city’s third largest biergarten is located outside the main bus station – a great place to kick off your Munich walking tour!. Here you can enjoy a variety of Bavarian staples, including obatzda, which is a regional cheese dip (with a consistency and flavor similar to pimento cheese in the American South). Everything else sounded highly mediocre, the only rave reviews were for Mediterranean cuisine, which is never my choice, or, beer and pretzels, like Augustiner Keller, where our groups ended up most nights.
