What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners rave about the authentic Bavarian cuisine, with many highlighting the delicious pork knuckle, sausages, and schnitzel. The traditional atmosphere and friendly service create a memorable experience, though some note it can be noisy during peak hours. It's a highly recommended spot for traditional German food and great beer.
"We had a wonderful experience at this lovely local spot, seated outdoors on a beautiful day. The service was excellent—friendly, prompt, and made the entire meal even more enjoyable.
We ordered the sausage platter and the crispy pork shoulder, and both dishes were outstanding. The pork shoulder was perfectly cooked—fall-off-the-bone tender—and came with a rich brown beer sauce, sauerkraut, and a soft potato dumpling. Every element complemented the other beautifully.
The sausage platter included four varieties, each delicious in its own way, but the spicy sausage stood out as our personal favorite. It’s definitely a must-try!
We also enjoyed their house beer, brewed in-barrel. It’s a light, airy lager—refreshing and just perfect for a summer afternoon.
Highly recommend this place for great food, great beer, and warm hospitality!"

"I ordered three types of sausages and I like two of them. One of them was a little spicy, but it wasn’t my preference. The local pork knuckle was good but their skin was a little hard than crisp. Coffee affogato was pretty good. The Apple strudel was more like a pie than a strudel. The wait person was very nice. She came every now and then to check us out if everything was ok."

"It is an amazing restaurant!
The waiters were friendly, polite and helpful.
The food was extremely delicious! The schnitzel with the potato salad was incredible, the best I ever had! We also ordered the pork elbow and sausages, they were equally delicious. We finished with the apple strudel, OMG , it was out of this world..definitely try it!
I 200% recommend it, I will definitely come back!"

18 Best Restaurants In Munich For Traditional German Food
Housed near the high-reaching towers of Frauenkirche, in what used to be Munich's Augustinian monastery, whose monks began brewing nearly 700 years ago, Augustiner Klosterwirt prioritizes Bavarian food and beer traditions of both the past and present. Over the centuries, Augustiner Klosterwirt has become synonymous with the city's best ambiance, beer, and food. Get started with a half liter of Augustiner Helles — a lager light tapped from a wooden barrel with a pleasantly malty taste —and a bowl of old school leberknödelsuppe, a brothy soup of liver dumplings.
8 Beer Stops to Make on a Trip to Munich
There are several Augustiner locations around the city but I loved that this one is a bit out of the way and has really great food. We sat inside in view of the bar (this was one of the cooler restaurants we visited as in the AC seemed to be turned on during the heatwave) meaning we got to see the bartenders tap the wooden casks of Helles with the easiest swing of the mallet. All of this mallet swinging felt even more German with our massive “snack plate” featuring four kinds of meat, three cheeses, a cheese spread, excellent butter, pickles, and bread.

I like the Augustiner Klosterwirt, one of several Augustiner beer places in Munchen, which is just up the street from the Hunting and Fishing Museum, and just outside the entrance to the Frauenkirche. Much better than the Hofbrauhaus. You might also try the Atzinger Wirtshaus, which is a Lowenbrau property, up by the University.

Not to be confused with Augustiner am Dom near touristy Marienplatz, this is a local's favorite for traditional Bavarian food. Located next to the Frauenkirche, this is the place to order a good hunk of meat. Their schweinsbraten is a masterpiece, and this is a place that knows what to do with its potatoes.

Where to find it: Käsespätzle is served all over Bavaria, but the emmentaler- and mountain-cheese-topped spaetzle at Augustiner Klosterwirt in Munich should be your first port of call. Klosterwirt also offers a variety of local brews on tap.
