What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Gasthaus Isarthor is celebrated for its authentic Bavarian cuisine and traditional atmosphere, with many highlighting dishes like Kässpätzle and the roasted pork. The Augustiner beer, tapped fresh daily, is a consistent favorite. However, some diners have experienced slow or unfriendly service, particularly during busy periods, and note that English menus may not always be available, alongside a cash-only policy.
"Had to visit this location twice. Sausage/saurkraut/spaetzl/schnitzel and beer. Best meals we had in Munich."
Chris Feickert
"The food was good. We enjoyed nice traditional German pub food. Thank you for that. However, we were very disappointed with the service. Staff were arrogant & unfriendly. No english menu available and they didn’t want to help us even for a few minutes. The staff were completely over run in the kitchen (that’s what they told us). We do understand that kitchen get easily overrun but during holiday season they should hire extra staff (cooks & waiters), it would be much more pleasant for the clients & staff.
We would recommend for sure."

"Food was good. Problem is the guy from the table next to us was drunk and started puking all over the place including right next to our seats and table. The group had been there for quite some time and was drinking heavily. He walked puking from his table all the way to the bathroom. No one cleaned it up. They wanted him to clean it…but he was out of commission. His table of friends were no help and the staff didn’t want to do it. So it sat there….inches from our feet and table. This had a serious negative impact on our experience. They refused to discount our bill. Then they also stated they didn’t take credit card. The only close by cash machine charged a very high fee."

Restaurants in Munich
This old-fashioned Wirtshaus is one of the few places that serve Augustiner beer exclusively from wooden kegs, freshly tapped on a daily basis—beer simply doesn't get any better than this. Antlers and a wild boar look down on actors, government officials, apprentice craftspersons, journalists, and retirees, all sitting side by side at the simple wooden tables enjoying good traditional Bavarian fare.
An Expert’s Guide to Munich’s Best Restaurants
This is one of those places that is very rare, where everything is the same way it was 50 years ago,” says Rolff. What does that mean?. Well, the staff can be a bit grumpy, but “in a nice way”, he explains, and certain groups of friends have had a standing reservation at the restaurant for years.
The 13 Best Bavarian Restaurants in Munich (2025)
A tiny and traditional German inn, Gasthaus Isarthor served me the best meal I’ve ever had in Munich. The roasted pork was crispy on the edges and buttery in the middle and was served with an ice-cold Augustiner beer and a warm and chewy bread dumpling. There are rarely ever tourists inside, so you know everything on the menu is traditional and delicious.

The interior is classic with old pictures and antlers on the walls. Here you will eat like (and with) the locals on long communal tables. The main courses are authentic and the sauerkraut is so sour, it will make you pucker.
