Reviews Summary

Tantris is celebrated for its outstanding haute cuisine and exceptional service, creating a memorable fine dining experience. While many praise the generous portions and harmonious blend of creativity and tradition, some diners have noted that service can be slow, and the value for money may not always meet expectations for the price point.

"Tantris is definitely one of my Michelin highlights and an experience I’d love to repeat. Its interior is a piece of art as well as the food. Portions were very generous and there was a great mixture of creativity and harmony behind each dish. Wine pairings gave me a chance to learn more about some exquisite German wines once again and service was excellent: attentive, knowledgeable, warmhearted and truly passionate about their job. An absolute 10/10 evening!"

vera leshkova

"The service is proper, respectful, but not timely. We waited in average 30 minutes for each course. We had 7 courses! The wine isn’t that amazing, the food is good but not impressive. I’m sorry to be so critical but for the price it’s not worth it."

Preston Schroeder

"Of course, the food was simply outstanding. The service of the dining room team, Lina and Maximilian in particular, was equally exceptional. Pleasant and discreet.
But what stroke me is the 1970’s elegant dang and ambience, the acoustic is fantastic, you can hear the music, you can hear the person in front of you next to you, but not a single intrusive noise from other tables or other element disturbing you. Very well design. Highly, highly recommended!!"

The Best Michelin-star Restaurants In Munich, Germany

Tantris’ 1970s retro-chic interior is the real deal – it hasn’t changed since it opened in 1974, and since its inauguration, it’s always held at least one Michelin star. Currently, the famous restaurant (which has trained some of Germany’s most lauded chefs) has two stars under head chef Hans Haas, who has been at the helm for over 25 years. However, the restaurant is set to close at the end of 2020, as the building requires extensive renovations, so if you want to get in before it shuts its doors, you’ll have to be quick.

Restaurants in Munich

Recently reimagined as a trio of restaurants under one roof, Tantris, which has been around since 1971, has smartly broadened its range of modern French culinary offerings. There's the classic Restaurant Tantris, with its pricey prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus of haute cuisine (around €300 per person); Tantris DNA, featuring an upscale à la carte lunch and dinner menu; and Tantris Bar, serving cocktails and a short menu of French favorites like beef tartare.

An Expert’s Guide to Munich’s Best Restaurants

With two Michelin stars, a history that stretches back to 1971 and a retro design scheme to match, Tantris is Munich’s can’t-miss restaurant for those who are interested in fine dining. “It’s probably the most important restaurant in Germany,” says Rolff. As the story goes, the founder of Tantris stole its first head chef away from the Kennedys.

Munich Food Guide

Fine dining in Munich is focused around a couple of very classical institutions, the ones worth mentioning are Tantris (two Michelin stars) and Atelier Hotel Bayerischer Hof (two Michelin stars) and if you’re interested in investing some serious cash in your meal, these are the places to go. The bistrofication trend, where finer dining food is made available in casual settings, is really not a big thing in Munich yet. There are a couple of exceptions worth mentioning though, like the Gastrobar Kopper where an International mix of funky dishes are served alongside a serious cocktail menu.

Wine & Dine: Munich's best wine bars

Not just because of the bright orange carpets on the ceiling, and because words such as: AFFENDURST (raging thirst), WEINSELIG (merry with wine) und DIONYSISCH (Dionysian) glare out visibly from afar in gold above guests' heads; but also, and actually only, because of its wine menu. Like a chronicle, it tells the story of the passion of the Eichbauer family and their sommeliers dating back almost five decades. The restaurant owes the treasures in its Schwabing cellar to its founder Fritz Eichbauer who, in 1971, started his epicurean adventure with an unbelievable 35,000 bottles.

Munich's award-winning cuisine: an overview

The listed 1970s building which houses legendary foodie mecca Tantris in Schwabing district has achieved cult status in Munich. The building is one of the city’s most prominent examples of post-war architecture, and the establishment itself is considered to be the birthplace of award-winning German gastronomy. Style / Ambiance: A true piece of art in terms of restaurant architecture and design, Tantris boasts a striking Asian theme of contrasting reds and blacks along with oriental sculptures by famous architect Justus Dahinden. Along with artwork throughout, natural materials complement this venue’s aesthetic. Perfected by Mr. Hans Haas, one of the most renowned chefs in the country, Tantris has held two Michelin stars since 1974, the longest period of any restaurant in Germany.

Best Munich Restaurants

One of only two restaurants in Munich with two Michelin stars, Tantris remains the foodie temple in the city; the building it’s been housed in since the 1970s, in Schwabing, was recently landmarked. The backdrop is a dramatic (and definitely retro) mix of China red, black and orange; the menu is a seasonal, classic French-Mediterranean affair, with multiple courses and a tome of a wine list. There’s also a small Tantris outpost in the Schrannenhalle near Viktualienmarkt.

Specializing in Asian-inspired seafood, the restaurant is glowing in orange and yellow with a surprisingly kitschy 70s ambience. But don't be fooled by its design, the food is its real statement piece.
