It’s just too classically Munich to pass up: in the center of the wonderful Viktualienmarkt—Munich’s excellent year-round open-air farmer’s market—is a large Maibaum, or Maypole, a common sight around Bavaria; but this Maypole is particularly large and attractive and is the perfect meeting point in the center of town. (By the way, traditionally Maypoles can be stolen by rival towns, and the successful thieves must have a party thrown for them in order to get their Maypole back.) Grab a fresh juice or cup of coffee from one of the nearby stands, or perhaps a wurst or a giant pickle, get in front of the Maypole (if it hasn’t been stolen!) and strike a pose.

A German tradition for over 200 years, the Viktualienmarkt is a goods market in the heart of Munich, celebrating the produce of the seasons, scattered across 110 tents, where vendors from all over the land come to present crafted beers, veg, meat, sweets and flowers. The market is zoned into little neighborhoods, and each neighborhood honors within its bounds a no-compete agreement—there will be no stand that sells the same produce.

A good way to get fast and good food in Munich is to nip into a butcher´s shop and point at what you want. Schlemermeyer is a small chain, but it is an open secret that their best stall is on the Viktuallienmarkt. They serve great cooked and smoked sausages and if you are feeling braver, you could try the Leberkäs – a type of meatloaf in a bread roll.

Just south of Marienplatz, it's home to an array of colorful stands that sell everything from cheese to sausages, flowers to wine. A visit here is more than just an opportunity to find picnic makings; it provides an opening into Müncheners' robust—though friendly—nature, especially at the Viktualienmarkt's Bavarian Biergarten (beer garden).

For classical, Bavarian cuisine there are an abundance of cosy, ancient Gaststuben to choose from across the city, but around the center I can warmly recommend Andechser behind the Dom or Beim Sedlmeyer behind Viktualienmarkt, two institutions that differ from their peers in the fact that the ingredients are of unusually high quality and thus also frequented by locals. The area around Viktualienmarkt is particularly interesting for food, apart from Sedlmeyer it’s also home to Fisch Witte, one of Munich’s best seafood restaurants, as well as Schlemmermeyer, a classical shop and Imbiss that serves the very best pork roast sandwich with crackling. Smother it with a generous amount of mustard and you’ll have one of the best street food snacks the city has to offer.

In 2015 a branch of the hyped Italian Eataly delicatessen chain opened within the architectonically interesting glass and iron construction of Schrannenhalle near Viktualienmarkt. It's true, they offer a good range of organic products, and organic food items are labelled as such on the shelves, but it's nevertheless a disappointing experience: Almost no fresh organic fruit and veges (not even the fresh herbs are organic), only pre-packaged organic meat (forget about the well-assorted meat counter), and the organic wines and spirits in the basement are not marked "bio" on the shelves, so it's very hard to find them.

Steps away from Marienplatz, you’ll find Munich’s thriving food market, featuring stalls crammed with colourful produce, fresh bites to go, a bustling beer garden, and plenty of wonderful local products to bring home. This (to me) is a much classier place to go souvenir shopping than the tourist shops that line some of Munich’s main streets, but regardless of whether you want to shop or not, this market is well worth a nosy perusal!. Keep an eye out for the market’s large maypole, identifiable by its blue and white pattern and figures representing the different trades that can be found in and around the area.

It’s quite pricey here in terms of grabbing a bite so I head to a pizzeria just around the corner recommended by locals called Pizzeria Grano (Sebastiansplatz 3) Prices are inexpensive. I treat myself to an excellent crispy pizza with tomato, rucola costing just €9.

If not, Viktualienmarkt is still a great place to grab a snack to fuel up. The market stalls at Viktualienmarkt carry an array of fresh fruits and vegetables along with local specialties. Try out one of Munich’s most classic foods, leberkäse, a Bavarian specialty meat loaf whose English translation of “liver cheese” does absolutely nothing to describe its surprisingly satisfying taste.

The Victuals Market or Viktualienmarkt is the central town produce market for the Munich old-town and one of the locals’ best loved spots. I had an amazing three days in Munich drinking beer in the beer houses, eating my body weight in pork knuckle and soaking up some of Germany’s best Christmas markets. On my fourth day I headed to nearby Fussen as a day trip in order to visit the famous Schloss Neuschwanstein, the castle that inspired the Disney castle and a must see for any trip to Germany.

Just behind and to the right of the Altes Rathaus, you can find Viktualienmarkt, which is the city’s famous open-air food market that has been here for the last 200 years!. You’ll find all sorts of meats, sausages, vegetables, flowers, knickknacks and more. They say that one who doesn’t check out the heart of Munich, can never boast that he has seen Munich.

Once a farmer’s market, Viktualienmarkt has become a place for gourmets, where you can buy any kind of delicatessen, or have a bite in one of the small restaurants. Through Maximilianstrasse I crossed the Hofbrauerei (a huge beer brewery with a biergarten), had lunch at Conviva im Blauenhaus and walked further to Viktualienmarkt. This area is where you can find the ‘bohemian chic’ of Munich. Nice small boutiques, people enjoying small terraces on the streets and everybody looking very sophisticated hippy chic.

When you visit Viktualienmarkt in the center of Munich, you find yourself in a lively market that’s a feast for the senses. This place showcases the best of Bavarian culinary traditions, offering everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to specialty cheeses, meats, and breads.
