This stunning building is a must for those who appreciate the German beer hall tradition, an integral part of the culture in Old Town Munich. While you might enjoy the pomp and the ceremony of others in and around the city, Weisses Bräuhaus is frequented far more by locals than by tourists and there is a notably different atmosphere. It is very relaxed and authentic while still remaining friendly.

Another of the best beer halls in Munich is the Paulaner Bräuhaus . Founded in the 17th century by a community of monks, the Paulaner brewery has become famous throughout the world for the authenticity of its beers, which is still intact today. In 1634, some monks of the order of San Francesco da Paola , guests in the monastery of Neudeck , began the production of a dark and strong beer, which was to be used for their sustenance during the Lenten period.

No exploration of Munich’s breweries would be complete without a stop at Weisses Bräuhaus. It’s the flagship venue for the Schneider Weisse brewery, a family-run operation that has become synonymous with top-tier wheat beer.

Weisses Brauhaus is a very Bavarian restaurant that even has “lung” and other innards on the menu. Open since 1872, guests come here to get the real Bavarian experience in food, drinks, and atmosphere. In the morning this restaurant, which is known for serving up some of the best weisswurst sausages in Munich, is full of locals getting their breakfast.

Other options include Weisses Bräuhaus (im Tal), Wirtshaus in der Au, Lilienstr. 51, and my personal suggestion, outside the inner city and by no means "touristy": Zum Brünnstein, Elsässer Strasse 36, a few steps from the Munich East station (easily accessible by S-Bahn). All with good Bavarian (not: German) cooking.

Other central spots to try include Ayinger am Platzl and Donisl, close to Marienplatz, or Schneider Brauhaus which has an extensive collection of wheat beer. The famous Hofbräuhaus is also an option, but be warned: it is known as somewhere to watch first-timers eat the skin or, worse still, order ketchup.

The tour first features a beer tasting at Weisses Bräuhaus (Tal 7) where seven types of wheat beer are produced. At Paulaner Bräuhaus (Kapuzinerplatz 5) there’s a brewery tour, beer tasting and dinner. Featured are traditional dishes like beef goulash cooked with beer and served with pretzel dumplings.

If you fancy a morning pint and would like to combine it with live music, the Schneider Bräuhaus is the place for you. On Sundays and public holidays, different bands play between 10.30 am and 1 pm. This is accompanied by classic veal sausages with mustard, pretzels and wheat beer.

On our second night, we stumbled upon Weisses Brauhaus somewhere between Old Town and the river. After a quick scan of the menu by the door, I was sold. Finally, a place with more than one vegan option!

They reportedly “rescued” the style when it became unpopular in the 1970s by saying it was healthy due to the yeast. It sounds corny but it worked. It’s now the second most popular style in Munich.
