Augustiner Zur Schranke offers a taste of traditional Bavarian cuisine with some reviewers praising the authentic flavors and lively atmosphere near Nuremberg Castle. However, there are notable concerns regarding inconsistent service and the potential for overcharging, with some diners experiencing rude staff and billing errors. While many dishes are well-received, a few have been described as dry or lukewarm.
"Splendid local food and atmosphere - located at the top of the road where the castle is.
Spaetzel, Cordon Bleu, and Pork Shoulder were all to die for. 5/5.
We personally dislike any potato dumpling in general and unfortunately there was not option to swap it for something else. Serves decent beer too."

"We stopped here for a bite after a long day of exploring Nuremberg. We had pork shoulder, spinach dumplings and sausages, Everything was excellent! Beautiful outdoor seating. The wait staff wear fun lederhosen. Four stars!"

"With their bad service, they loose the customers. We were treated like “ just finish your food in a hour and leave “
Our starters and main dish was all brought at once and said “ aha sorry” That’s all!
A drink, starter and maid dish had to finish within a hour! Although whole restaurant in first floor was empty, they were super bad in service!
May be they think “ aha they are just a tourists, don’t come back again”
Yes, if you have such bad service, no one will come again."

Paul's Beer & Travel Blog: Nuremberg
Gasthaus Schranke now appears to be owned by Augustiner of Munich, but 10 years previously it sold, amongst other beers, Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier from Bamberg. Despite having enjoyed this magnificent “smoke beer”, earlier in the day, at the Schlenkerla Tavern, in Bamberg itself, I just had to have one last glass, before rushing back to board the coach. It seemed a fitting way to end this whistle-stop tour of Bavaria’s second largest city.
The Best Things to do in Nuremberg’s Old Town
This restaurant sits across from the Imperial Castle, so it’s convenient if you’re visiting there around lunchtime. As its name suggests, it also serves beer from the Augustiner brewery, one of my favorite Bavarian brews. This was actually one of the reasons we chose this restaurant.

If you’re into historic buildings with incredible back story, and scrumptious hearty tavern fare, I highly recommend this one. The history of the establishment is printed on the menu and dates back to the 14th century!. It makes for some fascinating reading before you order.
Two Days in Nuremberg, Germany
Across the street was an outdoor restaurant, Augustiner Zur Schranke, where we had a light lunch of soup and pretzels with cheese spreads. Unfortunately I can't review German beer since I never acquired the taste, but the Riesling was delightful.
