Hausbrauerei Altstadthof, a craft brewery in Nuremberg’s Old Town, is a perfect place to chill over delectable Franconian cuisine and several kinds of brews, before selecting some beer for the journey home.

For traditional regional food, such as Nürnberg bratwurst, head to this atmospheric brewery and whiskey distillery. You can see the copper kettles where the brewery's organic Rotbier (red beer) is made.

Altstadt, also known as the Old Town, is the beating heart of Nuremberg’s nightlife, offering a charming blend of historic ambiance and modern entertainment options, particularly during the renowned Nuremberg Christmas Market. This historic district is dotted with bars, clubs, and live music venues, catering to diverse tastes and preferences. From traditional taverns serving regional brews to sleek, contemporary cocktail lounges, Altstadt boasts an eclectic mix of establishments to enjoy a delightful evening.

It was too cold to spend time walking around the stalls, so I headed up the hill to the Schwarzer Bauer, which is the tap for the tiny Altstadthof Brauerei next door. It was nice and cosy inside the pub, and after enjoying a couple of mugs of the house-brewed beer, I was loath to step back out into the cold. However, I wanted to see Nuremberg’s magnificent Imperial Castle, and can report that this massive structure, is well worth visiting.

One of the most amazing things about the Nuremberg Old Town is that a chain of rock-cut cellars runs underneath it. The cellars date back to the XIV century, when a law was passed that obliged every brewer to have his own cellar for fermentation and storing of the beer. The cellars not only survived to this day, but withstood the air raids during the WWII and served as a safe space for the citizens of the city during bombings.

Moving on from there, it was then just a short walk to the Altstadt (old town) which has been lovingly restored after wartime devastation. The Altstadt is divided into almost two equal parts by the Pegnitz River which flows through the city centre. We paused to admire the beautiful views of the old town from the Museum Bridge along Königstraße with its characterful buildings dating back to the Middle Ages.

You won’t find an enormous Bierhalle selling stock German cuisine across mile-long communal tables, but instead a modestly sized taproom with a central bar and stools around it. There’s limited bench seating to the left and right as well. Altstadthof hasn’t been open all that many years, but the choice of fixtures and furniture are well chosen and will gain character over time.

With lunch eaten and about an hour to kill before Schanzenbräu opened up, I decided to head up to the castle area to resample the Altstadthof Das Rote. The Hausbrauerei Altstadthof is largely credited with reviving the style. I’d returned in the summer of 2022 after a long absence and found their Rotbier well-made if not particularly to my liking.

A historic part of Nuremberg’s history lies below your feet in the vast tunnels of beer caves under the city. We explored this underground lair while on a private guided food tour with Wie Schmeckt Meine Stadt. Hausbrauerei Altstadthof: This classic brewery was the first to brew the original Nuremberg red beer. It has a restaurant and beer garden as well as access to its historical rock cellars. Many of these craggy passageways were joined together as bomb shelters during WWII and the brewery offers guided tours.

If you’re heading towards the Kaiserburg and Albrecht-Dürer-Haus from the Hauptmarkt, you’ll pass the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof. True to its name, the restaurant brews its own beer and offers a delightful dining experience. Naturally, the brewery shop is the place to go for all products beer-related.

The Altstadthof brewery in Nuremberg is the hub for the underground tours. There are several tours actually, not just the beer tour and art tour. The "beer" tour is interesting as it does take you down deep into the city in the old beer cellars that were converted into bomb shelters during the war.

For a break or lunch we recommend the Braustüberl of the famous Nuremberg brewery Altstadthof not far from the castle (picture above left). Here the best beer in Bavaria should be poured out after my many Franconians. Also the good plain food is excellent.

Stroll through Nuremberg’s charming Old Town, characterized by its narrow streets, half-timbered houses, and historical sites. Don’t miss Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain) and St. Sebaldus Church, both of which reflect the city’s rich heritage.

Let’s go to the not-to-be-missed original craft brewery called “Hausbrauerei Altstadthof”, downtown Nuremberg. After having a good meal and tested several brews, you can buy a bottle or an authentic mug that will easily fit into your luggage!

From the outside, the modern building is strikingly in contrast with the colorful houses you can find in Altstadt. Even the lobby interior is very modern, at least until you see the inner courtyard with traditional architecture.

If you want to try the traditional Nuremberg Rotbier when you visit Nuremberg, there’s no better place to go than the Hausbrauerei Altstadthof where they have brewed the beer for centuries.

Then there is the Winter Warmer which is produced by Hausbrauerei Altstadthof and contains malt, hops, and a special mix of nine spices. All of these tipples are very mouth-watering.
