Reviews Summary

Diners rave about the authentic Nuremberg bratwurst and the historic, rustic atmosphere at Zum Gulden Stern, often calling it an unforgettable experience. However, some patrons have noted instances of unfriendly or rude service from specific staff members, which can detract from the overall enjoyment of the meal.

"OMG! I had the MOST delicious brats & sauerkraut here! I was in Germany as a child and finally made it back. These brats brought back fond memories! They are cooked to order by a wonderful chef! So good! We came for lunch, then dinner the next day! The atmosphere is authentic & cozy. The service was friendly and accommodating."

"Very lovely and picturesque restaurant, and the oldest bratwurst restaurant in Nuremberg too. I had lunch here on a Monday and the service was fast. The bratwurst there were the tastiest I had in Nuremberg. I ordered the homemade plum parfait which was some kind of frozen plum ice cream, and I didn’t really enjoy it.

Recommended."

"Despite the satisfying food and the fascinating historical atmosphere, the waitress was completely unfriendly. She did not like first amount of which we had ordered, and she asked several times: "Is that all?" (This did not mean: "Is that all, What did you order?"). The food was again served in a rude manner. When it was time to pay, she pulled out the credit card reader. She covered the card touching area with the paper in her hand and showed the screen which showing the waitress tips menu “a kind of forced “ us for a tip, by pointing to the area on the device. I can say, that there are dozens of similar complaints about her on Asian social media accounts. I believe, such a historic place could be better off with much more professional and customer-oriented waiters. Waiters means not only, To take orders and bring food to the table; it is also about, To give the customer the feeling, welcome to be here. Even in a hospital doctor try to calm the patients and give them a sense of good vibe . But to be treated like that by a waiter in a restaurant . It was absolutely unpleasant. Even me, who usually doesn't comment any bad things and try share positive things always , I feel this time to let the know people what can be waiting for them with her , and there is absolutely no misunderstanding or anything like that. It is completely rude and intended waiters behavior."

The city council meets here—at the oldest bratwurst restaurant in the world—to decide the official size and weight of the Nürnberger bratwursts, so this should be your first stop to try the ubiquitous local delicacy. The sausages have to be small enough to fit through a medieval keyhole, which in earlier days enabled pub owners to sell them after hours.

Nuremberg Old Town: a Local’s Guide

Zum Gulden Stern is the (self-proclaimed) oldest bratwurst restaurant in the world. I don’t know if it is indeed the oldest, but given that it was officially mentioned in documents as early as 1419, I think it’s reason enough to be fascinated. The restaurant takes up both floors of a beautiful little house on Zirkelschmiedsgasse, close to the city wall.

For a more authentic expierience I'd try "Zum Gulden Stern", Zirkelschmiedsgasse 26, mostly frequented by locals (since it is 5 minutes out of the touristic paths); reservation recommended; waitresses' command of English is mostly poor. BTW, the "Steichele" mentioned above has also decent "Bratwoerschtla".
