What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Akra offers an exciting open-kitchen experience with authentic Greek flavors and exceptional desserts, though some diners have noted inconsistencies in service and found the mains to be average for the price. The vibrant ambiance and daily changing menu are frequently praised, but occasional issues with food quality and service prevent a perfect score.
"AKRA
A Home Dining Experience in Athens
During my week in Athens, I had the pleasure of catching up with childhood friends, including Eleni Best, who highly recommended AKRA for lunch.
A reservation is a must, this place is a favorite among both locals and visitors.
Ambiance & Setup
AKRA offers a unique open-kitchen dining experience, making you feel like you’re part of the action. Upon entering, you pass the bakery corner where fresh bread is baked, followed by the cold and hot stations, and finally, the grill and fire oven. The seating consists of small marble tables with cozy school chairs, and upstairs, you’ll find the pastry kitchen at work.
The most intriguing spot? The bar seating by the grill, where you can enjoy a bottle of wine while soaking in the sounds of crackling fire, sizzling food, and lively Greek music, nothing like the usual restaurant playlist.
Service
Maria, our server, was exceptional. She welcomed us warmly, took our order promptly, and ensured a smooth dining experience despite the restaurant being full. When I was about to over-order, she advised against it, a rare and refreshing sign of genuine hospitality.
The Food
Each dish reflected authentic, homemade Greek flavors.
Appetizers:
Fresh Bread with Virgin Olive Oil 🥖
Marinated Mussels, White Fish Roe Cream
Wild Greens, Olive Oil & Lemon Sauce 🥦
Mains:
Chickpeas & Spinach Soup 🥦
Stuffed Cabbage Leaves with Shrimp & Egg-Lemon Sauce 🦐
Black Pork & Onion Stew
Dessert:
Meringue with Lemon Sorbet 🍋
Final Thoughts
AKRA is a must visit if you’re in Athens and craving authentic, home-style Greek cuisine. The thoughtful service, vibrant ambiance, and outstanding flavors make it an experience worth savoring."

"Cute little place for a dinner. The menu changes daily and the restaurant utilizes Greek ingredients well. I enjoyed the raw tuna and the The restaurant is a bit noisy so it’s not the best place to talk, and the service is average.
Overall the food is quite delicious and the price is fine. (We paid 80 euros for two)"

"I'm writing the review because I want restaurant to know that they have really good quality of foods, but not the service. I and my partner had terrible service from our server, a lady with very short hair. Firstly we ordered a bread which was really tasty, however, our appetizer came after 30 min later we got the bread somehow. Even tho restaurant was not having rush time. I had some bread left on the table because I wanted to have it with our main, but we figured that we have to finish the bread otherwise we couldn't move to next course. Also, I asked a side of butter for bread, but the server told us that the butter is for shrimp dishes, not for the bread. like seriously. I don't mind paying extra for butter, but she basically refused to give us butter. She brought us a butter somehow after 15min later, but obviously too
late. I gave up and had rest of bread. Every foods we had was amazing, especially the dessert, milk tart, was incredible. Wine was tasty. everything was perfect, but the service she gave us ruined our night. I want the restaurant to take this issue seriously and improve their service more. I'm sure our server didn't know how to serve, and they should have experienced sever. Again, foods was delicious. I just feel bad for chefs who are doing amazing job."

Where to Eat Contemporary Greek Food in Athens
The first thing you notice when you enter Akra is the space; the kitchen, complete with open wood-fired oven, the 'laboratory' and the dining area are all part of one large, bright room. This was exactly what the restaurant's two co-founders, star chef Giannis Loukakis and acclaimed patissier Spyros Pediaditakis, had envisioned when they joined forces to create an exclusive dining experience combining fine patisserie and gastro-bistro fare. Like most of the places on this list, the menu changes daily depending on supply, but what is interesting here is that there are no starters or mains, as each dish can be ordered as a half-portion.

Their first joint venture, Akra in the hip Athenian suburb Pangrati, is a modest space that suits the minimalist but flavour-dense dishes: the menu changes daily but expect a tangle of marinated vine shoots, whole roast courgettes stuffed with fish cheeks, and silky fish soup. Almost everything is smoked, grilled, or roasted over an open fire, which is the focal point of the intimate dining room. Cooks and servers work around the rapt diners with methodical, almost meditative precision.
