Steps away from the busy harbor, Tamam feels like a giant leap back in time—it's an ancient Turkish bath that now houses one of the most atmospheric restaurants in Chania's Old Town. Tamam means "alright" in Turkish, but the plates presented are certainly more than okay. Under the former bath-house's cool arches and in the newer building opposite, Politiki Kouzina, Turkish-tinged plates from the Greeks of Asia Minor predominate.

There are restaurants around every corner, but you’d be hard pressed to beat the following in the old town: Well of the Turk (for its location in a charming square away from the crowds and delicious Cretan specialities); Ginger Concept (in the same square and serving Brazilian snacks, carpaccios, salads and pizzas; also has a lovely shop); Serenissima (for a more elegant and sophisticated dining experience); Tamam (housed in the old Turkish hamam, with a list of 70 plus dishes and a great selection of wines). Locals recommend Evgonia, hidden in a quiet corner of Milonoyiannis Street in the modern part of town, for a no-frills local cuisine and the best grilled fish.

For lunch I booked Tamam - I'd been trying to get into Tamam for a few days and it's a restaurant that definitely requires booking a few days in advance. Tamam is a mix of Greek and middle-eastern style food that is some of the best in Chania, they had one of my favourite dishes - giagantes - a butter bean dish with garlic, dill and white wine. The Iranian rice was another dish that came highly recommended to me; lightly spiced saffron rice with dried fruits and pine nuts - it was absolutely incredible and I'll be sharing a recipe soon of my take on it so you can all experience it too.

The restaurant’s building has a rich history dating back to the 1400s when it was constructed by the Venetians as a public bath. Later, when the Turks invaded Chania in 1645, they made some architectural changes and continued to use it as a ‘Hamam’ or steam bath. The restaurant’s menu is designed to satisfy all kinds of palates, with options ranging from rabbit cooked in sweet wine with rosemary to basmati rice seasoned with dried fruits and vegetables, as well as a variety of expertly prepared seafood dishes.

Located on the picturesque Zambeliou Street, Tamam has 3 spaces; 2 indoor and 1 outdoor, with the latter one having tables lining the alleyway of Zambeliou street.Tamam menu combines Greek cuisine and 'politiki kouzina' (which draws its roots from the Greeks of Asia Minor). The restaurant's fine wine list consists of 40 selected labels and during the summer season, you will find more local, Cretan wine options.

If you want to eat in the Chania Old Town you should try traditional food in the Tamam (renovated Turkish Hamam), the Ela, the Pigadi tou Tourkou (former 19th century steam bath) or the Karnagio taverna. You should also have coffee in the Palace (previous Venetian Mansion House) and the cafe next to the Lighthouse. For an early drink the Sinagogue (renovated Venetian building) is an excellent cafe-bar to try.

Middle eastern foods and native ingredients produce the explosive combination of flavors and colors you can enjoy in Tamam, also in the alleys of the Old Town. Cretan dishes with Turkish roots are served in an old hammam, a public Turkish bath not far from the Venetian Harbor. Here, local wines such as the reds Liatiko or Kotsifali are the base to produce unique stews.

Tamam's menu is influenced by Greek and Turkish cuisine, blending these two cultures' flavours and dishes to create their menu. Tucked away in Chania's Old Town, highlights on the menu include the stuffed sardines, the range of pies, the beef with aubergine purees and the rabbit. If you can, try and get a table outside for some prime people-watching whilst you dine!

I went to Tamam early in my visit before I caught on to the sharing concept, and I ordered something I didn’t particularly enjoy (and was hence stuck with a whole plate of that and nothing else). But I heard from a few locals that Tamam is one of Chania’s best restaurants, so despite my experience, I’m listing it here. Go for their local kebab-style meat patties.

Under the influence of oriental traditions with an admixture of Cretan flavor, the Tamam restaurant was opened here, where you should definitely order the Imam Bayaldi dish - eggplants stuffed with a mixture of tomatoes, peppers, herbs and garlic.

A popular Old Town delight, Tamam’s menu takes inspiration from Chania’s Ottoman past and serves great Greek and Cretan staples and many with an oriental twist. Mint-topped salads, kebabs and casseroles, are regular favourites along with mezze dishes like smoked pork and mushroom filo. Squeeze into a pavement table and watch the world go by.

The restaurant located in two building across a small back street was always packed, the tables lining the street seemed less popular but were usually full as well. Well, instead of heading back to our room, we made like the little fellow to our right....right to Tamam and found the outside tables empty. We sat down...immediately!

The restaurant Tamam, located in the old town, came highly recommended on every “best of” Chania food list, and also from the hotel staff. This raised our expectations, which can be a risky thing, but there was no need to worry: Tamam was probably our best meal in Chania.

We were lucky to have our Airbnb just 100 feet or so away from the highly recommended taverna, Tamam. Other travelers told me that I must go to this spot. We made it our priority on our first full day together in Crete.

It stood out from the other places as people were queuing to get a table. The indoor part has a few steps or there's the option to sit outside. the food is excellent and they serve enormous individual cheesecakes.

Furthermore, establishments like Tamam Restaurant and The Well of the Turk provide not only exquisite Cretan cuisine but also live traditional Greek music, creating an authentic and soulful atmosphere.

Marie Claire ordered the food pairings at Tamam which was such a nice touch AND everything was delicious. We could not forget the roasted vegetables all week!. The gift at the end was an awesome touch.
