In the old Ottoman district of Splantzia, opposite the underground church of Agia Irene, this restaurant is somewhat difficult to find but it is worth the endeavor. With vaulted ceilings, terra-cotta floors, cobalt blue walls set with jewel-like windows, and the eponymous well, it is a memorable place to eat a mixture of Greek and Turkish dishes with the odd trip to Northern Africa and the Middle East. Flatbreads, such as Fatayer bi Sabanikh, with spinach, mizithra, walnuts and raisins, and Lahmajun, with minced lamb and parsley, are particularly strong.

For more exotic victuals, choose The Well of the Turk in Chania’s Splantzia district. Here you can sit outside at a table surrounded by pots of bright-coloured geraniums and lemon-scented basil, watching crowds mill around the 13th-century Irini church opposite. The food is fantastic: think crunchy pitas stuffed with red pepper and tomato, lahmajoun (a sort of Turkish pizza flatbread) topped with minced beef or lamb, and other Middle Eastern specialties.

There are restaurants around every corner, but you’d be hard pressed to beat the following in the old town: Well of the Turk (for its location in a charming square away from the crowds and delicious Cretan specialities); Ginger Concept (in the same square and serving Brazilian snacks, carpaccios, salads and pizzas; also has a lovely shop); Serenissima (for a more elegant and sophisticated dining experience); Tamam (housed in the old Turkish hamam, with a list of 70 plus dishes and a great selection of wines). Locals recommend Evgonia, hidden in a quiet corner of Milonoyiannis Street in the modern part of town, for a no-frills local cuisine and the best grilled fish.

In the interesting, and less touristy, area of Splatzia (where the Turks used to live a century ago), this Middle Eastern eatery is again one of the most famous, and rightly so. An absolute must, for the beautiful interiors, the serene yard which stays calm even in August and for the eggplant balls, trinity dip, cheese cake (with Anthotyros cheese). We were to visit here with Matt on his last night in Chania but he decided instead to take the ferry from Heraklion so he could meet his friend Lefteris, the Cretan Taxi Driver who he had known for 15 years without ever seeing in person.

The first version, pictured above, from The Well and the Turk was deliciously flavored with Middle Eastern spices of cumin, turmeric and cardamon as well as preserved lemons. The second version, creamy with bitter greens to balance the richness, was from Rakomelo in Elounda. The Jewish Quarter of Old Town Chania is home for To Xani known for their traditional methods of food preparation.

I chose their vegetable moussaka which was a big meze, as more of a main and it was delicious and a great vegetarian option.

I accidentally stumbled across Ginger Concept while looking for the Well of the Turk, which you’ll also find on this list. Located down a classic Cretan cobbled street on the outskirts of Chania’s Old Town, Ginger Concept is a modern and elegant bistro serving up brunch dishes like smoothie bowls, Edam and prosciutto toast, and Nutella pancakes.

If you're craving a bit of a change from Greek food, go to The Well of the Turk, a place which looks like a Greek taverna influenced by Turkish elements. Afterward, make your way to the Old Chania Market, a historic, covered venue with numerous stalls selling crafts and souvenirs, pastries, cheese, olives, meat and more. A proper moveable feast!

Be a little adventurous and sample the unusually named ‘spicy aubergine brick’ or the ‘chicken cigars’ and you’ll be rewarded with taste sensations.
