"We had just arrived from Canada and decided to stop for a small bite before trying to sleep and get our clock turned around. We had two appetizers, a salad and a half litre of local white wine. The Morocan brick (aubergine in a filo pastry), meatballs with mint and cumin, and a watermelon salad. All were exceptional. The flavors blended so well together. The staff were friendly, and dining in a small courtyard made the experience wonderful. Don't miss out."

In the old Ottoman district of Splantzia, opposite the underground church of Agia Irene, this restaurant is somewhat difficult to find but it is worth the endeavor. With vaulted ceilings, terra-cotta floors, cobalt blue walls set with jewel-like windows, and the eponymous well, it is a memorable place to eat a mixture of Greek and Turkish dishes with the odd trip to Northern Africa and the Middle East. Flatbreads, such as Fatayer bi Sabanikh, with spinach, mizithra, walnuts and raisins, and Lahmajun, with minced lamb and parsley, are particularly strong.

There are restaurants around every corner, but you’d be hard pressed to beat the following in the old town: Well of the Turk (for its location in a charming square away from the crowds and delicious Cretan specialities); Ginger Concept (in the same square and serving Brazilian snacks, carpaccios, salads and pizzas; also has a lovely shop); Serenissima (for a more elegant and sophisticated dining experience); Tamam (housed in the old Turkish hamam, with a list of 70 plus dishes and a great selection of wines). Locals recommend Evgonia, hidden in a quiet corner of Milonoyiannis Street in the modern part of town, for a no-frills local cuisine and the best grilled fish.

In the interesting, and less touristy, area of Splatzia (where the Turks used to live a century ago), this Middle Eastern eatery is again one of the most famous, and rightly so. An absolute must, for the beautiful interiors, the serene yard which stays calm even in August and for the eggplant balls, trinity dip, cheese cake (with Anthotyros cheese). We were to visit here with Matt on his last night in Chania but he decided instead to take the ferry from Heraklion so he could meet his friend Lefteris, the Cretan Taxi Driver who he had known for 15 years without ever seeing in person.

We really enjoyed our dinner here that was mostly based on various Turkish meze.
