What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Throumbi offers delicious Greek cuisine with many standout dishes, particularly known for its authentic flavors and generous portions. While the food garners high praise, diners frequently note significant issues with slow and inattentive service, which can detract from the overall dining experience. Despite the service challenges, many still find the food to be exceptional and worth a visit, especially when enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of Chania's Old Town.
"I'm just gonna say it. I live here and have tried so many restaurants. And really they are all good. But this place IS A LEVEL ABOVE. The BEST. Not a fancy view but the service and excellent, very excellent food more than make up for it. I've been here several times. I've had most of the menu and EVERYTHING is so good. Kostas is an excellent waiter along with everyone else here. I will keep coming back often. Don't miss this place. I highly recommend the mustard chicken souvlaki. I also love the steak salad and the pork steak is bomb!!"

"Thrumbi has good food – probably one of the better spots in town, especially considering the overall lack of great restaurant options nearby. That’s actually why we came here twice on two consecutive nights. But unfortunately, the service is a serious weak point and really takes away from the experience.
The staff is not friendly, barely speaks any English, and you’re left waiting around 20 minutes to even be noticed. They ignore you, and there’s even a line just to get in – which might feel justified because of the food, but definitely not because of the service.
What was especially frustrating is how the food is served. They ask you in which order you’d like things, but then completely disregard that and just bring dishes randomly – one by one, however the kitchen makes them. It creates an awkward situation where you’re all just sitting at the table waiting for each other’s meals to arrive.
And this wasn’t just a one-time thing. The second night, we specifically said we wanted the grilled cheese first, then the salad – instead, they brought the salad, then the main dishes, and only at the end the grilled cheese. I honestly don’t understand this way of serving food.
It’s a shame, because the food itself is nice – but the experience doesn’t match it, and in a country that lives off tourism, you’d expect at least basic English and a bit of effort to make guests feel welcome."

"We had a very disappointing experience here. The service was disorganized and unwelcoming. One of the dishes we ordered was served raw, even though the staff insisted it had been “in the oven for 2 hours” — it still had a jelly-like texture and the flavor was really off. On top of that, our gyros took nearly an hour to arrive, and during that time at least four different waiters came by to ask if we were finished, even after we repeatedly explained that we were still waiting for our food.
To be fair, the gyros itself was good once it finally came, but by then the whole experience was frustrating. Between the poor service, long wait, and the disappointing first dish, we left very unsatisfied and wouldn’t return."
