This restaurant—named after the mistress of Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado—is something of a local institution; tables are scattered throughout a dozen rooms, but it's still not easy to get a seat. Early-morning specialties include fruit salad, pancakes, and very fresh bread (the bakery is right downstairs). Sandwiches and other light fare make for ample lunch and dinner options.

Sometimes you read about all the places you have to go to and how fabulous they are and ya da ya da but I often find that if you get lost and you have a screaming toddler in tow you will find the best pancakes in town, because thats what moms do. After our visit to Dona Luisa’s I read so many reviews of this ancient establishment and they were all right. A beautiful courtyard with a lively atmosphere and fantastic friendly staff.

Restaurante Doña Luisa Xicotencatl, 4a Calle Ote 12, has the feel of a well-run corporate restaurant set in a gorgeous leafy courtyard of a historic building. Menu includes well-executed breakfast, hamburgers, and Guatemalan interpretations of Tex-Mex food. They use purified water on their vegetables and for drinking and ice, which means their menu is in-bounds for tender First World stomachs.

While the take-out bakery gets all the accolades – the best banana bread you’ll ever have comes out hot out of the oven early in the afternoon, the two-story restaurant behind the bakery is worth a visit. Doña Luisa has a varied menu – soups and sandwiches, and salads.

Dona Luisa is one of the oldest bakeries in Antigua, and you know you’re getting close because the smell of freshly baked bread meets you about halfway down the block. They are most famous for their banana bread, but you can also try their almond bread or my personal favorite, chocolate-orange. They also sell bagels, croissants and homemade granola.

This was our first courtyard experience in Antigua, which only inspired us to seek out more!. There’s plenty of seating in this beautiful, two-story space, located in a building from 1650. We snagged a first-floor corner table and enjoyed fresh-made smoothies and a bowl of chili while we pored over our guide book and planned our time in the city.
