A Hungarian friend took us to the Café Kör (Sas utca 17; tel: 06 1 311 0053) when we couldn't get a table at Tom-George (ok, it was George Karpati again; it's a couple of blocks away and was also rather busy but they took pity on us and seemed to recognize him), and I was wary because of negative comments on Chowhound and elsewhere, but was very pleasantly surprised, both because there was a wider range of Hungarian dishes than found at most serious restaurants in the city and because they were by and large executed to a standard far above the average there. And it was not filled exclusively with tourists and expats. Reservations are important here and in most places worth eating during the tourist season.

For those who prefer authenticity coupled with a classical touch, Cafe Kör is the place to be. Located in the heart of downtown near St. Stephen’s Basilica and Liberty Square, Cafe Kör has been serving up their classic fare for decades. While flashy, style-over-substance places have come and gone along Sas, the reliable standby — with an engaging menu, reasonable prices, and a cozy dining room — remains Café Kör. Closer to St. István Square itself, a pair of wine-focused eateries have earned adoring fans. The classy Borkonyha (“Winekitchen”), which earned its first Michelin star in 2014, takes pride in pairing top-quality Hungarian wines with a nose-to-tail aesthetic and creative reinterpretations of classic cooking.

Over time, we got to be treated as regulars by Kör’s ever-present manager, Gábor Molnár, who would greet us with a hearty handshake, show us to our table, and recommend some of the specials that were written on a sheet of paper clipped to the wall.

Kor, meaning circle, used to be exactly that, a place for all types of creatives – authors, journalists, you name it – to gather around tables and have meetings of the minds over a tasty bowl of gulyás. Now, they offer an exquisite menu of authentic Hungarian dishes with an innovative touch, which are always beautifully delivered. The restaurant is intimate, maybe even a little too close for comfort for some, but the food makes up for it.

A local gem, Café Kör remains as simple, cozy, and classic as when it first opened in 1995. If you're looking to dine where the locals do, you'll find businessmen here during their lunch hour, along with families of all ages on Saturdays. Café Kör is an absolute must in Budapest, one of the most popular restaurants since its opening in 1995. The first time I visited this restaurant, if I remember right, was in 1998. As I worked for 20 years in the neighborhood, I visited this restaurant frequently since then.

I’m urged by a couple of people to visit Café Kor and it’s easy to see why. It’s situated right near my hotel, in the upscale Vaci shopping district. Inside, the room is peach-coloured and homey, and at night the place is always full, necessitating bookings.

Located just around the corner from the St. Stephen Basilica, the Café Kör or 'Circle Café' is a long-standing favorite place in Budapest for lunch or dinner, but a great place for a light meal at any time, including breakfast, available till noon.

While in Budapest, we ate at Cafe Kor, Bagolyvar, Noir et L’Or, Ristorante Krizia, and Restaurant Hanna. Most of our food was pretty good, and all our meals were reasonably priced, even if you thought in dollar terms.
