Reviews Summary

Café Kőr is highly praised for its authentic Hungarian cuisine, with many highlighting the delicious goulash and duck dishes. Diners also rave about the cozy, old-world atmosphere and the polite, efficient service. While most experiences are overwhelmingly positive, a few reviews mention dishes being slightly under-seasoned or the presence of food odors.

"Exceptional dining experience at Café Kör! The serving staff were incredibly polite, helpful, patient, and genuinely friendly. The ambience was excellent, with a lovely mix of locals and tourists. The food was outstanding! The pork knuckles and beef dishes were absolutely delicious. Highly recommend Café Kör for its top-notch service, cozy atmosphere, and mouth-watering local cuisine."

"Café Kör is one of those classic Budapest spots that feels like it’s been doing things right for a long time—and for good reason. The atmosphere is warm, bustling, and charmingly old-school in the best way. It’s the kind of place where you can imagine locals and visitors sharing tables for decades.

The menu sticks to traditional Hungarian fare, and the food is solid—hearty, flavorful, and clearly made with care. We had a great meal overall, with the standout being the daily special. That said, a couple of dishes felt a little safe or under-seasoned, which is the only reason this isn’t a full five stars.

Service was quick, professional, and very efficient—even when the place was packed. It’s not overly chatty or warm, but it runs like a well-oiled machine, and that’s something to appreciate.

If you want a true local experience with reliable food and a classic Budapest feel, Café Kör is absolutely worth visiting. Just make sure to book ahead—it fills up fast!"

Best Hungarian Restaurants in Budapest To Book in 2025

Marking its 30th anniversary in 2025, the Café Kör has maintained the consistently high quality of its Hungarian menu, scrawled on a large white sheet of paper on the wall. restaurant roundup

A Hungarian friend took us to the Café Kör (Sas utca 17; tel: 06 1 311 0053) when we couldn't get a table at Tom-George (ok, it was George Karpati again; it's a couple of blocks away and was also rather busy but they took pity on us and seemed to recognize him), and I was wary because of negative comments on Chowhound and elsewhere, but was very pleasantly surprised, both because there was a wider range of Hungarian dishes than found at most serious restaurants in the city and because they were by and large executed to a standard far above the average there. And it was not filled exclusively with tourists and expats. Reservations are important here and in most places worth eating during the tourist season.

10 Must-visit Restaurants for Hungarian Food in Budapest

For those who prefer authenticity coupled with a classical touch, Cafe Kör is the place to be. Located in the heart of downtown near St. Stephen’s Basilica and Liberty Square, Cafe Kör has been serving up their classic fare for decades. The atmosphere recalls a bygone day when sit-down restaurants acted not only as places of dining but also as cultural hubs where writers and poets and artists could carve out a full-day corner to digest several small meals and ungodly amounts of wine and liquor.

14 of My Favorite Traditional Hungarian Restaurants in Budapest

Ten years ago, when I had an office job in Budapest, my colleagues and I had a steady routine: on Fridays, we ate lunch at Cafe Kör. We liked the restaurant’s traditional dishes and friendly atmosphere. Over time, we got to be treated as regulars by Kör’s ever-present manager, Gábor Molnár, who would greet us with a hearty handshake, show us to our table, and recommend some of the specials that were written on a sheet of paper clipped to the wall.

Now, they offer an exquisite menu of authentic Hungarian dishes with an innovative touch, which are always beautifully delivered. The restaurant is intimate, maybe even a little too close for comfort for some, but the food makes up for it.
